so as not to steal kmots venice90 thread thought I'd start a hydro thread. some pics showing various aspects. astute viewers may notice a few missing items from the motor compartment...like the radio and thrust bearing(rx pack gets pulled when done for the day, ditto the prop shaft), well I needed/wanted them for a different boat whose parts were back-ordered.

heheh well Tom is closest to being right...thats 'bob bobberhead'. was at the store awhile back and found some 1.25" bobbers on sale...bit of black paint for the face and balsa shoulders combined w/ epoxy and viola driver and flotation for the hatch :)

Since I got involved with Kmots' Venice 90 thread with a vintage hydro comment I feel I should share what I've done. Great idea Rex R. Great looking hydro too, may I add.
Here's the Equipage Tornado 80 with the Aquacraft B36-56 Brushless & speedie as used in the SV 27. 12 x IB 4200 cells Flex drive & m445mm prop.
Must make some clothes for the driver.

my kit was one of the early versions (vintage vintage?) that I got 2nd hand, so it didn't come wit all the refinements that the current kits have(also had a few missing parts(cosmetic, dashboard,windscreen, and steeringwheel)). basic construction is fairly straight foreward and well covered by the instructions(I've heard of one that was built in a day(unpainted) and was on the water the next day. where the instructions fall flat(imo) is the hardware installation, that gets covered by a couple of lines of text. the hull design lends itself to easy painting. had I had some more experience building hydros(or more local help) methinks it would be running better...well at least I didn't fry this motor this year. still have to fiddle with the cg mine is to far aft(got to much weight on the tail).

I believe offshoreelectrics sells an assortment of drivers also(clothed).Nice boats 785boats and Rex R ! Thanks for pictures. 785boats, your hydro must haull axx with that motor!!Have any idea of how many MPH ????

Looking good Paul !
I take it that you threw the useless factory fins away? Mine are still on for now,but i'll fill the holes when i re-do the hull.
I don't know how much power it would take to get the tail up,they are just so heavy.
I will have mine on lipo power when she's going again,but i wouldn't bank on it being this year.

What motor are you running in your hydro? Is it set up for any particular class of racing? I've heard mention of lifting props before. Do you (or anyone else) have any idea of one that might lift the tail of the heavy old
tornado? The balance point is right on the end of the sponsons. The prop is angled about 2 degrees to give upward thrust at the transom. Any insight would be gratefully received.

I'm Sorry Tim, I've got no idea how fast it goes. Not fast enough is all I can say. It's sooo heavy. I haven't run it with any other hydro's yet to gauge it.
Maybe this Saturday at our Inter club Regatta.

this boat (according to the designer) was designed with the 700 ss1/ose700sc(I've got the ose700sc). set -up for the NAMBA LSH class. sounds like the cg ought to be ok (about 3/4") behind the sponsons...
edit
can't really tell from your pic...if you place the boat on a flat surface, is the boat level? or tail down? I've heard that this type of boat likes the bottom of the strut to be even with(or slightly lower than) the sponson ride surface(the rear edge).

Paul, I set my 1/16 th hydro to have the prop hub level with the rear edge of the sponson.
I would be curious to see how ride pads would help,it may reduce the wetted area at full flight.The strut depth would need to be adjusted accordingly.

I'll give it a try. Mine's about halfway down at the moment. I did try it lower with the 700 NeoX but it just seemed to bury the prop & load up the motor.
Maybe the extra thrust of the brushless will lift it when set deeper. I should have tried it yesterday at our inter club meet when Deestingray suggested it but didn't get around to it. Next time Dee.

Paul, ride pads are what i'll try on mine before i do the full strip down and fiberglass,that way i can experiment with setups etc.

Well guys. I set the depth of the prop level with the sponsons and at an angle of 3 degrees. Tried a 440, M445, & 40 x 52 3 blade (Grim Racer) props.
Still wouldn't tift the tail, even with the balance point ahead of the sponson trailing edge, ie nose heavy. None of the hydro racers at our club can figure it out either. run times were short because the prop was so low in the water. Temps were up a fair bit too of course.
I read an article some time ago where it was suggested to bend the tips of the prop to make it lift. I'll have to research this a bit more before I "ruin" a good prop.
Anyhow.
Steer clear of the rocks.

Interesting Paul,thanks for the update.
Sounds like you're running short of options,keep at it though.
I'm not up on these motors,what is the kv rating?
I'm thinking that i'd like to swing a 45-50mm prop on 6S,really give it what for.
Perhaps one of those hefty KB motors.
Steven Vaccaro suggested a Feigao 10XL may be the go on 4S.
