View Full Version : Help! Airbrush won't cover large enough area

I have a 25' wingspan Spitfire. I am painting the entire underneath of the plane in one uniform color. I have borrowed my brother's airbrush, a Badger 150, but it only seems to spray a 1" wide swath at a time, and lightly at that. As a result, I am forever going back and forth to get an even covering. Even then, I am ending up with uneven streaks with gaps in between. It's like trying to color a sheet of paper black with a sharpie pen! A regular finishing paint gun is too wide and 'too much'. Is there any technique or gun I can use that is something in between an airbrush and a finishing paint gun. P.S part of the problem with finishing paint guns is that they are designed to be used with relatively large volumnes of paint, and a single 10ml model paint jar is barely enough to even start with before it's gone.

There are airbrushes / paint guns that are in between too much and too little. You want something like an iwata LPH 80, it has an adjustable spray pattern from 1/8" to 6". Most airbrushes are too small for even small or moderately sized models. I cannot imagine doing a 25' model!

Use the airbrush for finer details like oil streaks, rivets and panel lines.

I like using a touch up gun for models. I have two, a Badger and a Devilbis (spelling?). The Badger is inexpensive and works well. The Devilbis is professional level and is priced accordingly. You can get a knock off from Harbor Frieght for low bucks. A guy I know bought one and he says it works amazingly well.

If the 25' span are not a typo a standard workshop spray gun should work fine. Fiddle with the controls, and if necessary thin excessively and work in thin coats if it sprays too much.

I picked up a touch up gun from the local auto parts dealer. It has a small (4 oz) gravity feed cup and is HVLP. I have had good luck with it so far.
If you really are painting a 25 foot wing, go to the "auto body shop" paint guns!
