i'm looking for an rc servo that stays in the position it was last told without keeping the servo energized. in other words, i don't want to have to waste power keeping the servo in the position i want it to stay in for an extended period of time. does anyone have any cheap servos to suggest? torque and accuracy are not an issue.

You should be able to mod most/any servo to do what you're asking. I haven't done it, but from what I remember having read, it consists of removing the potentiometer and possibly a stopper-piece from inside.

If you take apart a conventional servo, you will realize what you are asking is not possible. Removing the pot and the stopper piece will only make the servo turn 360 degree non stop. Servo needs POT to know it's current position and use power to hold it there.

Hmm. I thought I had read otherwise before. Although, I could easily be wrong (as I have never done anything of the sort myself).

You can cut the power to any servo & it will stay in position, (within a twitch) but theres only the gearbox resistance to hold it there... so, if you choose a very low-geared servo (ie a slow, powerful one) such as retract, sailwinch, etc, or any that use worm gears, then the unpowered servo will resist being forced around by the load better than a fast, higher geared one would. Worms are almost impossible to force, once in position a worm-geared servo wouldnt budge. Whats the application?
