View Full Version : Help! My power supply blew up!

Well, it sounded like it blew up. I was using my Ripmax 20A dual output power supply to run a 12V motor. The motor was using 7.9A of power and all of a sudden there was a BANG and smoke and stink. I pulled the plug and took it outside as I didn't know if flames were next!

As it turns out, a uf470 25V capacitor blew up. The charger wasn't anywhere near its maximum amperage output. I have run motors before without a problem. I have used two chargers at a time and seen it run at 11-12 amps and not have a problem. I don't think running the motor caused this. But I am unsure.

In any case, instead of sending this back to the distributor and going through all that, would it be advisable to just source a like capacitor and solder it back into the board? Do you think any other components may have been electrically damaged during this event?

May be those switching supplies do not like Inductive loads like motors or solenoïds ...

Looks the regulating circuit did not regulate any more the output ...

You've 50% chances It will run again just changing your capacitor(s) ... but other circuitry , may be, did not like this OVERVOLTAGE ( It was really one !!! )

a 470µF 25 v is a cheap component ... so a try won't cost you much !!!

But keep ready to switch off the mains ...

Alain, thank you for the reply. I do not understand how or why it was an 'overvoltage' but I will take your word for it.

I know that capacitor can be sourced for twenty five cents. I might as well try it and see what happens.

Thank you!
