Harley asked me to post some info about the Smooth Genie Pro to rcgroups for him...

If you've not had the pleasure of seeing or flying one of Harley's Genie designs, and you enjoy high performance full-house sailplanes, you owe it to yourself to find out more about them...

Harley's words:

With the further refinement of the elegant Smooth Genie Pro, (File 12 at http://genie.rchomepage.com/) & witnessing its performance in the hands of a talented flyer, I got inspired to do new “universal” plans for the 5 thermal ships in the line & have concurrently & extensively edited the web pages to correlate to them. Friend Jay Decker has again generously posted them for on line viewing.

For those who’d like to be able to scratch-build & fly “full house”, bagged wing thermal airframes, support has never been better with the new plans, new pictures, revised instructions & continuing access to help by e-mail at harleym@bmi.net.

Hits on the website, dedicated to scratch-building, have passed 31,000 & are coming in at about 1,000 a month. This tells me there’s interest in that discipline. Regrettably, I think too many, with much to offer, have succumbed to the notion that only manufactured ships can fly superbly. That defeatist thinking squelches the collective, latent creativity present in a huge body of modelers & denies us the privilege of learning extensively from each other. Dormant American ingenuity needs to awaken again to advance this hobby.

At 86, I’m way beyond my peak to do justice flying my designs. However, I’ve not abandoned use & development of building skills & refused to let my creative abilities atrophy. This year has been yet another one of new discoveries that have now been incorporated into the ever-evolving Genie line.

To get some perspective on what these designs are about, get into the website & first read the File “What’s a Genie”. Take a good look at that SGP in File 12 & the Gallery. Look at the Gallery to see what others have built & have to say. Look at the “What’s Available” file to see what’s available to help make these designs a realistic project.

My #2 SGP is intact & #4 will soon be finished for 2008. I go nuts without being involved some significant way in this game, so I’m continuing to offer plans, packages & support this upcoming building season. By e-mail I can handle dealing with as many as 50 builders & that gives me an idea.

Let’s start a “Genie 50 Club”. . . . all-volunteer membership. . . no dues or rules. Order plans & a package, confirm you’ve started building & you’re in. If you’ve built a ship, you’re in. If I know you’re building, you’re in. I’ll compile a list to pass on so we can communicate with each other by e-mail.

Augie McKibben of Crystal, MN & Loren Blinde of Lincoln, NE are on board as “Genie Consultants” for input other than mine. See the Gallery File about them & their ships. Neither had scratch-built a ship before & pulled it off beautifully.

October is a good time to gather things needed to make building a leisurely fall/winter project. You’ll have rewarding ships to fly & will have acquired a body of knowledge & skills to use over a lifetime of modeling. As a bonus, you may make new & valuable building discoveries to pass on to the rest of us.
