I served aboard the CGC Avoyel '67-'68 out of Eureka, CA. Glenn Staubitz sold a fiberglass semi-kit of this tug at one time. is anyone aware if this kit is still available. Or does anyone know of a partially completed project languishing on the work bench that they'd sell?

Staubitz sold that semi-kit in three scales, 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32. Of the latter,
he only made three, and the 1/48 version was the most popular. :)

He went out of business in 1989, the molds no longer exist, and he has since passed away. :(

You may wish to check Ebay from time to time, as there have been several Staubitz kits offered there over the years. ;)

:) DER KAPTIAN- “Stabitz of Buffalo” a blast from the past. Like a dream of fond memories or a nightmare, miss the old S>O>B. The man sure could build, and say what you will he did a lot for the world of radio controlled model boating. He may have been a S.O.B. be I called him my friend. :)

Staubitz got me started in fiberglassing way back in the early 1980's, and I kind of picked up where he left off, and am still at it, 25 years later--- :)

It was Glenn who introduced me to you and Ralph Warner, the WRAM and Toledo shows, and many other notables, way back when, Rich. ;)

He always insisted that S.O.B. stood for "sweet old boy", but everyone knew better---. :D

Thank you gentlemen. desron48 thanks for the tip on the Scale Shipyard. That was exactly what I was looking for. Will your superstructure be in both scales offered?

I should add that Staubitz helped me a lot as well when I first started WHU / SSY back in 1979.
There are a lot of things I learned from him on the proceedures of building models with fiberglass hulls that I still pass on to my customers.

S. O. B. ment many things :-)

Yup, he was an odd character, but I never recall anyone who viewed him as a bad sort. :D

Karl:

He told me what SOB ment and it was Son of ....well you know, but it was in humor, Glen was a great guy with a wealth of knowledge, he did get burned out by all the politics in the model boat clubs...some things do not change.
The Sunken USS Arizona model in Pearl Harbor was built by Glen

Glenn wasn't that bad a guy. He couldn't have been or we wouldn't still be remembering like we do. He was willing to share his knowledge as long as he thought you were receptive enough to listen to him.
I had to really talk him into selling me his tug kit. It was like I had to prove I was good enough at modeling to buy one from him. I liked Glenn, wish he was still around today.

Though I never met him back then, it's good to see these tributes to Staubitz and his model building skills. He was a real craftsman whose work was both inspiring and daunting. I miss seeing his work today, but we seem to have a plethora of talented people in the hobby these days.

Yes, Tug Guy, that was one of his traits, that reluctance to sell thing---. ;)

Lee, there was a stink several years ago about Bob Sumerall claiming to have built that Arizona. He kinda lost when Glenn's daughter challenged him on it, producing photos of the model under construction in his workshop---. :D

Sorry to hear of Glenns passing. He was one of the pioneers of scale ship modeling.

Funny, I received an e-mail today from someone named "John" on that very same subject. He seemed to have known Glenn fairly well at some time---. ;)

If you knew Staubitz, you would never forget him, he was a real character---. :D

:) KAP- Due you remember how Glenn would show his customers how tuff his hulls were by taking a hull and slamming it down of the table to show how strong they were. He nearly gave my brother and I joint heart attacks with the giant thwacks when we were manning our booth next to him at the WRAM shows. The one thing you can say for sure is if you showed an interest in something he was doing or had a question , he was always willing to help you. We partnered up and made running hardware and power packages for all his hulls and semi kits. Even back them he showed disgust in people looking for instant gratification , and not willing to put some effort into a project. :)

Rich, it's probably better that Glenn passed away before he could see all of these Chinese RTR's flooding the market---. ;)

As it is, he's probably rolled over in his grave several times already---. :D
