Since I got up into the mast and antennas of the SDM tug, I suddently needed one of those Furuno radar thingys...
Not having the skills or equipment to CAD and then have one printed like Tarsier over at Modelwarships.com, I had to build my own. :o
Tarsier made a good set of plans, so I worked from these. (http://www.shipmodels.info/mwphpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8884&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=90)
Not bad for scrounging around the house. :D

No I won't be building a coffee maker... :p

Very trick Umi! So is that 1/2" or so in size?

Gee whiz, Umi, that's cool! Using styrene to add the detail is a great idea. :)
PS - the link to the Chinook blew my mind. Maybe some day...eh? ;)

Thanks guys.
The unit case measures 3/8" x 1/4 x 5/16" high - 7/16" high with the base mount.
Once I get it cleaned up I will see how it casts... :)

Tarsier's pilot boat is an awsome build, can't wait to see it on the water.

I was kind of all down for a while because I thought that this was going to be really hard and impossible to do... So I am very happy with how it turned out.
Right after I put the first layer of styrene over the top, I dropped the piece, and ended up clearing the whole work table, and then the chair, and then checked to see of the glue had stuck it to one of my sleeves, or in my hair, and then checked the carpet, and finally way back under the referance table, the piece was under some of the network wiring... What a ridiculous situation that was... :p
I may make it run, depends on how I get the rotation wire up to the piece. The unit
sits out on the end of a bracket above the pilot house.... Again, the SDM was supposed to be my basic competition work boat, not a super detailed model...
Things have a way of evolving though.
The "Balsa Plank" is a polyurethane product. A freind in Illinois sent me out a brick, because he had to make a minimum order. I just use a disposable micro brush and thin cyanoacrylate glue to assemble the parts.
I notched the base, and it looked horrible at such a small scale, so I filled it back in, and will keep it as pictured for casting. :)

I was going to add operational radar to my Super Springer. I have an old kraft servo that came in another boat I recently acquired. It turns near scale so I modified it to rotate 360. My radar was just going to be a piece of bass wood sanded to shape. The fine brass shaft to turn the sweep was going to be either CA'd or attached with a piece of tubing to the servo.
The most complicated piece was the salvaged micro switch I soldered to the red wire...
Your excellent tutorial may have complicated matters...in a very good way ;)

Actually, it was a small power droid, but I am converting it for
use as a sensor for Advanced Electronic Guided Interceptor System.
However there are some phase issues, and I am going to have to make
a trip to Tashi station to pick up some power coverters... ;)

Ropanch,
What happened to your sails?
You didn't let some rebel princess put a blaster bolt through the deck did you?

Are thouse fertillity (spelling) pills on the mold, do you have a pink mold too, they seem to work, those baby's are poping right out of there

Interesting stuff - what products are these? Do you add the casting resin and push together or are these poured until they loop through the mold? Not much free time these days to experiment. These look good.

Hi Mike,
I pour down through the antenna, and wait till the resin rises up through the base and gear box. There are a couple under cuts on the base, but once the mold is under pressure, all the nooks and crannies are filled.
The little "pills" give the two sides proper alignment, and the ridges not only help alignment, but help keep the resin from leaking out the sides and bottom.
:)

hmmm,
had never thought of adding a ridge, but makes great sense.

Here is a completed installation of the little bugger on my SDM tug.
It may not make coffee, but it sure sounds like a coffee grinder...
Sorry no sound, still using old digital technology... :o

looks good Umi, thaught ya'd get it animated somehow.
as regards sound, mine sounds like that too, rather than having a solo servo motor running on 1.2v, I have removed the guts out of a servo and used the entire gearbox as well.

Umi:
looks like it works, and yes I can see the wire, goes from the radar through the deck, :) Floods? :D all I need is the size, anything less than 3/4" x 3/4" face is a pain, and the L.E.D.'s stick out the bottom of the lamp, OH  and how many Right and how many left?
Because L.E.D.'s have a + & - leg , so depending on the lay out of the wires it will make it easier to set them up on the boat.

It was a lot of fun attending the Hobby Expo 2009, however
I came away with some comments that seemed to be asking,...
Does that come in a larger size?
Well, since I heard that question a number of times I figured
that perhaps a couple products should come in another size.
:o
No no, don't order yet,... I have still have work to do on them...
