Mike,
I posted this as a stand alone question in this forum, but since it's almost "Mike Mayberry specific" I'm going to paste it here real quick in hopes that you might have some insight. Should I just send this one in?
BTW, I met you at the ROAR Nats back in '98 I beleive, racing at Performance Raceway in Houston. It was my pleasure...and refreshing to see a racer that wasn't loaded to the gills with novak or LRP stuff. :) I'm actually still running my HFX speedos. :D
<<begin paste>>
Hopefully one of the many radi gurus here can help me out.
I have a lot of radios, but one of my favorites is my trusty (and simple) old Hitec Focus 4. Recently I went to fly one of my favorites (Gerasis Smart...I know I know, worthy of a better radio)...at any rate, the Smart's ailerons were out of trim, and the trim lever was of no use! Not a bit of movement. The stick moved them just fine.
It wasn't a servo or receiver issue, as I tried a different radio in it (futaba tx) and all was fine.
Does anyone have any experience or first hand knowledge on how to replace/repair the trim? Is it just a pot that's probably bad? Is it a common value/type pot that I might be able to do myself? I hate to have to send it back to Hitec as it's no longer under warranty.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks my ezone brothers.

Lance- That's cool you remembered me from that race... In fact that was the best finish I ever had at a Nation event; 3rd in stock sedan! I don't think I would have a prayer of doing that good nowadays. :)
It sounds like the trim pot is bad. It's an easy fix for our techs and shouldn't set you back more than $20 if we even charge you at all. Just send it in... Here's the info: http://www.hitecrcd.com/Support/service_and_repair.htm

Hey Mike:
I need to replace the gears in an HS85BB; the guy at the LHS didn't have the Hitec lube for them, and said it wasn't in the 2003 hitec catalog. He suggested a mixture of lithium grease and petroleum jelly. If it's true hitec no longer makes the servo grease, what do you think of his suggestion?
On a related noted, I'm wondering whether or not to replace the gears with the original plastic, or spring for the metal ones. I'd like to think I can avoid the conditions that led to the first sets' getting stripped, but in case not, would a force strong enough to strip plastic gears damage the servo itself if it had metal gears instead? It's being powered by a BEC that supplies, I think, 5 volts.
Thanks,
Jeff

We do still have the servo grease although we are out of stock right now. Lithium or white grease will work fine. Petrolium jelly will just break down into a liquid so I don't suggest it.
Since you are using the servo in an electric airplane I would stick with nylon gears to save weight unless you are continually stripping them. Also take a look at the top case where the pins seat and make sure the hole is not oblonged or this will cause the gears to strip.

Hi, Mike-
here's the situation. I would like to by an Eclipse w/Spectrum module in the 72mhz. spectrum.
The problem is, I now live in the NL, and will be here at least through next spring/summer.
My questions-
Can you suggest a local source for buying a 35 mhz. freq. module to use while I remain in europe (to replace the 72mhz module I will use in when I return to the states)?
and secondly-
Is it possible to go with a single 35 mhz. channel crystal while here in europe (that is, forego a spectrum module)? Is it safe to assume that the Spectrum module can be replaced with dedicated single channel crystals?
Thanks,
d.man

Yes you can just swap in and out the modules but I don't have any info on a dealer in your country. I would think it would be available. I would talk to a local hobby shop and see if they can order it for you.
I can e-mail you a list of world agents if you can't find it.

I am looking for a good 4-5 Channell radio to buy compatible with the GWS Beaver and the future airplanes i'll get.
I have been recommended the Hitec radios mostly, especially the http://www.hitecrcd.com/Radios/RadioHome.htm Falsh 5X. But it's around $180. and i didnt want to spend that much money. I need recommendation on 4 channel radios that could support 3-4 planes and/or i need to know if anyone out there has the Flash 5X so i can be sure that it would be a good investment for the long term.
Please help me with your advice..

Mike..
I have 85mg (2) as flaperons on a 4*40 using hitec servo savers. Evertthing is free and clear..Nothing binding..but the servos continue making noise with half plus aileron or over 15 degree flaps when holding the setting.
I am leary of adjusting the flaps to their max due to the noise on holding..and was wonderng what the problem can be. This is my first flaperon model and the first time using 85mg servos.
They have more than enough torque for the use intended and I am surprised at the moan while holding a setting.
Any help greatly appreciated..

just one more-- if I buy the 72 Eclipse with the Spectrum, will I be able to run single non-spectrum crystals in it after converting to a 35 freq. module?

Undercover- The Flash 5X is a very popular radio. You can search on it here or on http://www.rcuniverse.com to see what others have said about it. The nice thing is that it will grow with you, but a Laser 4 is also a good start but will limit you somewhat in the future.
ahab- It's not uncommon to have a little buzzing. I doubt if there is a problem.
demoman- The module will have the crystal in it so you don't want to change it or it will be out of tune.

Sorry to be unclear, Mike, but I'm not clear. I wish there was one in a shop locally that I could check out physically.
I'm assuming that the Spectrum module is separate from the main crystal module? I assumed that there was a main crystal module (either 35 mhz or 72), and then individual channel crystals within that spectrum (in a separate Spectrum module).
Therefore, when I get a US Tx (Eclipse with Spectrum mod) over to the NL, I will have to change both the main crystal, and either get a euro model of the Spectrum module, or, hopefully, I could get by with individual channel crystals.
If you do have a list of euro dealers you could email, I would appreciate it very much.

Not to step on Mike's toes and I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong but....
The RF module does all you need. A Spectrum RF module directly replaces a 35MHz RF module. The Spectrum module uses electronics to select the channel. The standard RF module uses a crystal instead to select the channel. There are no other modules or crystals required.
In your radio you have either a 35MHz module with a crystal OR you have a 72MHz Spectrum module which does not need a crystal.
It's that easy.

Hi Mike,
First off I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying my Eclipse 7 w/spectra...
Question: While in helli mode (120° Swash setting), I am trying to get my dual rate gain gyro to work. I noticed the manual (page 41) says the gyro needs to be plugged into Ch6??? I thought this was for the collective servo?
The Gyro setting lists 50% as a default setting but no matter what value I use I can't get my gyro to respond. :(
Also, if I wanted to use Chn5 as a triggered (gear) switch, how can I achieve this or is Chn5 'locked' out when in 120° swash mode???
TIA

Hi, Mike, glad to see that you're still chipping away at this!
I'm slowly but surely working my way out of the "old stock" of my old Hitec servos with the "non-Z" Airtronics connectors. I have two or three airplane projects that I'm finishing up or recycling the servos on.
Specifically, I'm in need of Hitec 555 Rx's with the old "non-Z" Airtronics connectors. Does Hitec still supply this version of the 555?
If not, could always install new servo leads compatible with a "current" version of the 555.
Take care, and have a Good Holiday Season!

Doctor Who- No, the Electron is not included with any radios at this time. The 555's are still available; the link is on the side of the receiver page.
demoman- Steve got it right.
Wild Moose- Plug the Gyro into channel #7 and use the switch to get the dual rates.
Bill Harris- Sorry, no. We discontinued all the old Airtronics connector stuff a few years ago.

Mike,
My brother is buying his son (and himself) an r/c plane for christmas. Since I have two SSs I recommended a SS.
In these hard economic times, he is a bit strapped for $$$. But I'd hate to see him buy a cheap plane with electronics that are not as good as hitecs and that can not move up to the next airframe.
A while back the SS beginner was being closed out or on special at one of the Big Hobby stores on the internet for $79. That deal is long gone.
Do you know of any other deals?
Does Hitec sell scratch and dent or previouisly used/abused sky scooters?
Do you know of any other places to buy an inexpensive SS beginner?
Is the SS pro version 1 being closed out?
I'd hate to see him get a Firebird knock off.
Thanks,
Eric

Hello Mike,
I am seriously considering purchasing the Eclipse 7 and needed a couple of questions answered. First, can I run a 5 channel receiver, such as the FMA M5, using two aileron servos? I noticed from the manual, that CH1 and CH6 are designated as right and left ailerons respectively, this would eliminate all but 6 channel receivers. Second, if I ordered one now will it have PCM compatibility?
Thank you,
Dave

Hi Mike -
I posted this on "radios", but no reply yet, maybe you can help me. I'm installing a Hitec SSII receiver in an EPP combat plane I'm building. I'd like to run the antenna through the fuselage, but I've heard some "metallic" coverings can cause signal interference. I'm using aluminum ultracote - do you know if this will be a problem?

Mike, it has come to my attention via the Batteries and Chargers forum that a possible problem exists with the CG-340 charger if used to "top off" a previously charged pack just before flying. It seems that the "no false peak" feature will not allow the charger to shut down for six minutes after start, so it cannot detect an overcharge state during this six minute period, causing possible damage to the pack. Is this the case, or is there indeed a peak detection system in the CG-340 that should/would over-ride the "no false peak" feature should a fully charged pack attempt to be "topped off"? Bear in mind, the charger has been fully disconnected from the 12v PS in this scenario, not simply re-started via the LED pushbutton. Thanks, -thumbs

erashby- Sorry, no "B stock" to sell. I doubt if you find the kind of blowout price on the Pro as you did on the beginner version but if there are any left I would think the price would be reduced.
locomoto- You cannot use a 5 channel receiver for dual ailerons in ACRO mode but you can in GLID mode. The new QPCM version will not be available until early next year.
Angelo- I don't know for sure but it may. The only way to know is to do a range check with the antenna in and out and see if there is any significant difference.
wanda- You can change the crystal in the receiver but as per the FCC and AMA you cannot just change it in the transmitter without retuning. We charge about $20 for the service.
fumblethumbs- The false peak curcuit has a 2 minute lockout. Where did you read it was 6 minutes?
Quacker- That's actually and easy one... There are many things that have to be changed and Hitec does not convert them, nor can we provide the information on how to modify any of our products for obvious reasons. Sorry!

Well Mike, I have to confess that I had read this part after purchase and forgotten all about it, blissfully topping off my packs just before flying and sometimes wondering why the packs were getting so warm off the charger! Two or six minutes? I have to believe the six minute figure, as that's about the amount of time it typically takes for the cutoff to occur at the field. Others have had packs suffer damage while topping off with the CG-340, as reported in the "Batteries And Chargers" forum, but fortunately I cannot claim the same and will no longer use my CG-340 to top off packs with. At the very least, I feel that Hitec should place this information in a more prominent place other than in small print, next to last item, back of the page. Regardless, Hitec is still among the best of manufacturers to do business with, as your presence here attests, and I thank you for your continuing support for all of us! -thumbs

I've got a simple question. I'm getting back into the rc hobby after a few years of absence and can't remember this--how much angular rotation in degrees should I expect to see with full side to side stick movement? I don't know if this varies from brand to brand, but I have a new Hitec Laser 6 radio (my first) and am checking things out.
Thanks,

I somehow seem to have broken the 3 position switch on my Flash 5X (the one that you use for spoilerons/flaperons). I have no idea how this happened since I didn't drop the radio or anything. One day it was working, and the next time I went to use it, it only would go to two positions.
My question: is there somewhere where I can buy a replacement switch and install it myself? I'd like to fix the problem without having to go without my tx for a prolonged period. Thanks.

Mike answered 60 degrees. Didn't you mean 60 degrees each way from center? That is, 120 degrees total? I thought I was getting over 150 degrees out of my HS55s.
I assume Rod was asking how far the servo control horn should move with a full swing of the radio stick. Did you mean that the radio stick moves 60 degrees, 30 up and 30 down (or left/right)?
Thanks in advance for clarifying!

Thanks for the answer regarding the servo rotation. Not that this question was brand specific, but it nice to have manufacturer reps who can expertly answer equipment questions. I belong to several e-groups where factory reps reside for help; it does a lot to maximize user confidence and productivity, and is good PR for the company to boot.

Fly, Mike,
In case there was some confusion, I was asking what is a Hitec servo's maximum angular rotation--and by total, I mean the sum of the angle on either side of the neutral position. I am using the the HS-422 servos if that matters. I guess to avoid confusion, I should have not mentioned the radio stick at all.

Hi, hope I'm not too late for this.
I'm using a Eclipse 7 radio with elevon mixing activated for my Wattage F-22... however, there's one very interesting quirk. The controls work fine, but the trim directions are reversed! It's really difficult to trim a plane when the trims are in the opposite directions of the controls :)
Settings:
Elevon mixing ON
Master:2 Slave:2 Percentage: -72%
Master:2 Slave:1 Percentage: -84%
Master:1 Slave:1 Percentage: +84%
Master:1 Slave:2 Percentage: +77%
Servo Reverse settings: All on Normal

realglow- You cannot swap transmitter crystals without re-tuning it as per the FCC and AMA.
Rod B- :D :D :D
XTY- Sorry no. Try searching on the subject here.
simingx- You will need to change the servo reversing and then set up the mixing so that the controls travel in the proper direction. What you have done was use the mixing to set the servo direction but you needed to use the reversing first or your trims will be backwards. I hope that's not too confusing!:)

Mike, I'm having the same concern as fumblethumbs about the "feature" of the so many minutes of anti-shutoff on the CG-340, however...
I charged a pack yesterday that should have taken about 1/2 hour to charge. It's a AAA 720 NIMH pack, and I put the charger on about 0.9A for charge rate. I made the big mistake of walking away and coming back about 35 minutes later.
I expected a nicely peaked pack sitting there waiting for me. Instead I find the pack scorching hot and most of the heatshrink burned off of the batteries and the pack itself. Needless to say, I think the charger needs to be repaired. Where can I send it? Note that I'm in Canada

Mike,
A few posts back, I inquired about what I should expect for the angular rotation of my Hitec servos. Your answer to me (via Fly's query) was 60 degrees each side of the neutral position. On my new Laser 6 system, the most rotation I see is 40 degrees each side of neutral. This appears to be the case for all of the channels with any of the 4 servos included, even with the ATV adjusted for maximun throw on those channels that have it, and the dual-rate switches in the high-rate positions. That's a full 40 degrees shy of the quoted 120 degrees. It looks like there may be a problem; what's your appraisal?
The batteries are freshly charged and delivering their rated voltage.

Dec 20, 2002, 11:27 AM
Sorry... 60 degrees is only possible with computer radios that can select 125% EPA and 125% D/R. 40 degree is normal for the Laser. The normal travel is 30 degree in each direction for standard radios but you are able to get an extra 10 degree with the EPA and D/R. I don't think there is a problem.

Hi Mike, I've been having a bugger of a time setting up a new DLG. I have the Hitec Eclipse transmitter, and I'm using an FMA M-5 5-channel receiver in the glider for weight savings.
The glider is a 4-servo plane, Rt. Aileron (1), Lt. Aileron (5), rudder (4), elevator (2). I'm using Glider mode, and have tried both 4 servo wing and 2 servo wing setups in the transmitter. I have the ailerons working properly and using the CROW feature have linked the flapperon function to the throttle stick, which is what I want. I also need two presets for camber adjustment on the alierons for launch and thermal flight. This SEEMS possible in 4-servo GLID Mode, using the STM1 and STM2 features, but these only do subtrim adjustments on channel 6 and 7, which even if I use programmable mixes to tie channels 6 and 7 to channels 1 and 5, don't pass through to the aierons. The manual shows channel 1 in the picture of the display for STM1,2 but the transmitter doesn't let you control these settings. What I really want is for STM1,2 to be able to set subtrims for channel 1 and 5 as well as 6 and 7 or rather instead of in this case.
Is there any solution short of tearing out the 5 channel receiver and putting in an 8-channel receiver to run the ailerons on channel 6 and 7? I've already modified the receiver to fit in this plane. Possibly some clever use of the flight condition switch? I tried setting up flight conditions, but the trim on the throttle channel doesn't seem to effect the crow trim setting on the transmitter for some reason?
Thanks for you help,
Al

MikeMayberry:
Remember I told you in a thread some time ago that a plane of mine was found this summer that I lost in the woods 5 years ago? It contained among other things a Hitec Supreme HFD-07RA 35 MHz receiver.
Here is the story:
In the summer of 1997 I flew my Cox .049 powered Graupner Topsy at my grandmothers place. I was a beginner at the time and didnīt check the receiver battery (110 mAh battery). I had already flown 29 flights that evening (hey, each flight was only 1.5 minutes!) and when I launched for the 30th time, I had just begun a climbing turn when I totally lost control of the plane. It climbed higher and higher in beautiful circles and the motor ran better than ever. It circled in over the woods and went further and further away. When it finally crashed somewhere in the woods it was already pretty dark and we didnīt see much point in looking for it that night. The next few days when spent ALL our time there from sunrise to sunset and never found the plane.
This summer a friend of ours found the plane (wing was lost) and handed it to my dad. The plane was crap but I always thought that the receiver (the Hitec Supreme 7) looked pretty good considering it had spent 5 years in our Swedish nature with temperature ranging from -15 to +30 degrees celsius and have been exposed to rain, snow and burning sunshine.
Well just 15 minutes ago I though: "Why not try the receiver?". I even used the xtal that has been sitting in it for 5 years. And to my surprise, it worked!!! I plugged an ESC with BEC into ch3 and a HS81MG servo into ch1 and sure enough, it controls the servo perfectly! Pretty cool stuff!!
What do you think Mike? :D
EDIT: It range checked better than any of my current mini-receivers. Compared it to my Superslim the Superslim range checks at about 120 feet (36 meters) compared to 160 feet (a little under 50 metres) for the old Supreme 7. These numbers are from the TX to the place where the servos start making the LEAST bit of buzzing. Even the Superslim range checks to 160 feet before the servos really starts to jitter.

hi mike,
I have an eclipse 7 in a sailplane using 4 servo/wing mode. I get some glitching on my left flap (ch7?) especially when I try to use full camber changing mixed to elevator. the glitching goes away when I turn off the flap to elevator mixing. Does this sound like anything you have heard of before? BTW, I think I have isolated it to the transmitter. This is the second plane with this problem. 2 different recievers in 2 different planes with different servos and different wires( twisted of course). Hoping there might have been some software upgrade that I've missed in the past. Had the transmitter about 1 1/2 years.
Thanks in advance

Hi.. solved the problem with the trims. Just needed to swap channels 1 and 2, indeed.
Anyway, does Hitec make RF modules for the Eclipse in 29MHz? It's the only "legal" frequency down here.

O.K., Mike here's one for you, do you have a stupidity exclusion on repairs? Today I, ummmm, well...you see, I ran over my virtually new Flash5, I haven't even sent in the warranty yet.

Anyway, was wondering if I should send it back for repairs or would it be cheaper to buy another one?
Thanks for your help.

I seem to be having a problem with these servos. This is the second HS-55 that I've had to replace due to twitching and occasional "lock-up" in flight.
I'm using a Feather RX; however, that doesn't seem to be the source of the problem. There aren't any other flyers, pager or cell towers nearby.
When the servo starts twitching I have moved it to a different port (ie. swapped rudder/elevator) and the servo continues to vibrate regardless, so it's not the RX signal causing the problem.
Put in another new servo and the problem is solved.
Unfortunately this causes a new problem, the new servos are being scavenged from projects on my workbench. :(
Both of these servos were less than 6 months old but I have been hesitant to send them in as I'm not good about saving receipts.
Any thoughts?

I've just purchased a 555 receiver from a guy. Its setup for Ch. 43. Will there be any problem moving it to Ch. 15 by just changing crystals?

Randy,
Just change the Rx crystal to a 15 and you'll be fine, just make sure you use a Hitec Dual Conversion crystal. FCC figures we're smart enough that we can change our Rx crystals just not the Tx.

I feel your pain (about swapping tx xtals)! As you probably know, itīs completely different here in Europe. When I bought my MPX 3030 tx the guy simply asked: "and what xtal should I throw in with that?" and once I had answered that, he asked: "do you compete so you need any alternative xtals?"
Thatīs pretty much how it works. Now that I think of it, I really have to order a new xtal... ch73 (35.130) is getting too crowded at our field.

Hi Mike,
I own a Flash 5 SX Radio, which is fortunately in much better shape than Ron's (Sorry Ron) :( .
I lost the length adjustment screw at the end of one of the sticks. Could you tell me how I may purchase or obtain a replacement? Musta forgot to tighten it up.
Also, just ordered a Sky Scooter Pro 2 from Tower - talk about the trainer deal of the century! Nice RTF plane with motor, charger, battery, GB and a $90 radio.

Ok, sorry for the delay as Mikes on vacation until the 6th., you are all stuck with me. ha ha ha. I mean Ho Ho Ho. Don't fret as Mike learned all he knows directly from me, except how to spell. Lets clean this up.
Allan,
You must use at least a six ch. Rx.
Erik,
Very cool, I think. What is "snow"? No really that's a great story.
Markwslope,
Based on your description I recommend that you send the Tx back to our service center for a "look see".
Bobbbd,
Are you knocking the trims between flying sessions? We would be glad to check it out for you. Send it in for service, not a bad idea to tune the "ol' muthu up" if it's been lying around for a while.
Ronrandle,
What can I say? Thankfully according to a Mr. Darwin you and your kind won't be around very long anyway....Send in to the service staff and beg them to take pity and perhaps they will honor you with a fair quote to repair or replace it. I saw a guy crash a nice scale plane awhile ago, he placed his nice Tx down and hopped in his 1 ton Ford truck to drive the 500 yards to where the plane crashed, as he left the pit area he drove over his Tx. Double whammy.
Sierra Aardvark,
Read my lips, Two Year Warranty. Let the service department fix'em up for you. Don't worry about the receipts, tell I said so! I only keep receipts long enough to loose them, personally.
RMoore
No problem, just use a Hitec Dual Conversion crystal and do a good range check.
Hwierd,
Knew a full scale sailplane legend named Hod. Asked him about the name, he said he flew P-38's and 47's in the war. When he returned to the States changed his name to Hod from Howard. He took the "war" out of his name.
E-mail me at work, glen@hitecrcd.com, your address and I'll forward you a screw. Try the new Sky Scooter Pro 2 prop blades and the bigger capacity 600ma battery on that Beginner Sky Scooter, amazing difference.

I am sorry but I don't know. We can only import 72, 75 and 27MHz product in the USA so I don't know what the availability of 29MHz would be elsewhere in the world.
COOP
Every little feature added to a radio costs money during the manufacturing process and the Focus 3 is a low end economic radio. In an effort to bring the Focus 3 in at an attractive price, we left out the trainer capability. Frankly a three channel transmitter would be of limited value when used with a flite sim anyway as you would like to have a four channel rig to get the basics down.

Miike or Glenn I asked the question because I am new to this hobby and didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on it and find that I didn't want to stay in it. The 4 channels were just a little to much to explain to the wife. I would like to have a 4 channel but since I have the 3 channel kinda hard to say I need another when I destroyed my first ever e-plane. Any one out there want to part with there old stuff?

Hi JAH! Almost every device that employs a extension antenna is a victim of the Bleriot Bend. I trash almost as many aerials as I do ferrite motors:p. I thought I was pretty slick by holding the tip and letting the weight of the radio extend it...............that is until the day the top section seperated from the rest and my Tx goes crashing onto the concrete, shedding even more parts........Tx Carnage. Nothing is safe! Happy New Year! Best Regards

Yeah my excuse on the Focus4 for bending the antenna was the sun was in my eyes, haven't come up with one for the "let the weight of the TX" work with gravity to extend the antenna trick!

Can a Tx set up for Mode 1 be changed to Mode 2 control by the user or back to the factory?
Is Mode 2 the "normal" mode for Heli? It seems to make sense that the Cyclic (L/R & fore/Aft) control is on one stick. the right in Mode 2.
Does shift select mean that I could fly a model with JR or Airtronics Rx installed.

Dr. Who
Very good choice, I just love that Spectra module. You know where to find us if you have any questions.
J40
Very easy to slave it with the Eclipse, use P-Mix 1 and slave ch. 7 to ch. 2. If you still insist on reversing it take a deep breath, as you are about to void your warranty. With a steady hand and a pencil tip soldering iron reverse the two motor leads and then reverse the two outside wires attached to the pot. That will reverse the direction of servo rotation. What plane is this for?
Joffacn
"Can you change a Tx set up for Mode 1 back to Mode 2? Depends on which transmitter it is, some can, others must be done at the service facility.
Is Mode 2 the "normal" mode for Heli? In my very opinionated opinion, yes it is "normal.
As long as the receiver is FM just change the Eclipse Tx software to match with JR or Airtronics shift.

Glen and anyone else!
Servos are for the Kyosho F-16 EDF. The design has a bent linkage that alot of posts indicate reversed or slaved and reversed on slaved channel would really improve the dual elevator servos. Gives you a straight shot with the linkage. Been sitting on this plane for 3 years now. I think its time to finish it. This plane became quite popular with the EDF guys. Lots of experimentation was done from what I've read. Need 2 for elevator with 1 running in reverse, 2 for flaperons and throttle. I know my Focus 6 dont stand a chance. How bout my Prism7 or Eclipse Glen? You said something about the Eclipse mixing.I was paging through the manual the other day trying to learn what all its capable of. Can I do this with my software (new last Feb.2002 Hobby Horse)? I'm thinking weight wise-it might be best to use a reversed servo with regular servo on channel 2-then 1 and 6 for flaperons. New Electron 6 sitting there for the jet. 7 channel or 8 alittle heavier isn't it? After insulting the manual-this looks do-able. What do ya think? Happy New Year Jim

Glen or Mike:
I left my Eclipse on the shelf for the past couple of months while I went through some building and the holidays. When I went to set up the servos on my new plane, the low battery alarm went off when I turned the Eclipse on. Since I was impatient, I took out the battery and charged it on a Great Planes Triton. When I replaced it and turned the radio on, the battery voltage now reads 19.2 volts, the display screen now shows, faintly, every LCD on it, and the throttle trim stopped working. To quote The Talking Heads, "My God, what have I done??"
BEC
Jan 06, 2003, 02:20 PM
I was one who succumbed to Hobby People's after Christmas sale on the Eclipse/Spectra and mine arrived late last week. It is my second computer transmitter. My first is a Multiplex Cockpit. The comparison is pretty stark and makes me wonder about the long-term effects of the recent announcement that the owner of Hitec in Korea just bought Multiplex.
Anyway, so far all I've done with it is charge the Tx and spend some time with the manual......and it is rather daunting compared to the MPX manual, as are the options and how they are set up.
I have found a couple of errors - first, the frequency flag setup that was provided doesn't match the manual's description (no pockets into which to place the numbers provided). I guess I will have to glue or tape the numbers on the placard.
Second, the V-Tail illustration on page 25 is incorrectly labeled. At least my V-tail airplane will make a right-hand turn when the ruddervators are deflected as indicated, not left.
I also think that the knob on the right hand side top of the transmitter (VR2 as indicated in the diagram on page 19) is channel 6, not seven - for flaps, right? It sure is awkward to reach - especially compared to the flap slider in the center of the Cockpit (between the throttle and elevator trims).
Now - a question that I am genuinely confused about...... there seems to be several switches that have two or more functions, generally involving the programmable mixes. I get the impression that, for example, if I have a mix defined in the programmable mix #3 slot, that the channel 5 (landing gear) switch controls whether or not that mix is in. So, if the gear is up, the mix is on, and if the gear is down, the mix is off (or vice versa depending on the sense of the gear servo operation relative to the switch). Is this correct? In other words, one shouldn't expect to use both retracts and P.Mix.3 (unless, perhaps, one wanted to change elevator trim to compensate for gear drag or lack thereof).
The same thing is true for the channel 7 switch and P.Mix.1 and 2 (and you get both or neither). And it appears you must choose between rudder dual rates, aileron/rudder mixing, and use of P.Mix.4. Is this also correct?
Now, granted, I don't anticipate, at least in the near term, any of these shared switch functions being an issue, but I do want to understand what the limitations are.
I'm sure as I actually try to set up a plane with this Tx I'll have more questions.....
Only slightly related - could either Glen or Mike point to a European Hitec distributor that might be able to sell a 35 MHz module for my Eclipse so that I might use it on a planned Irish vacation later this year? I don't think I need a 35 MHz Spectra, just a single frequency.

I noticed that the Eclipse 7 battery tray has the ability to use either 2 pin white connector battery pack or a 9 volt tip clip (Futaba style) removable battery cartridge. My question is can you use Alkaline batteries when you are in a jam (forgot to charge NiCads) in the transmitter? Since the voltage is 12 volts (1.5 x 8) instead of 9.6 volts (1.2 x 8) ?
MikeMayberry
Jan 09, 2003, 01:24 PM
I would use HS-81's in this plane, not 55's if that was a question. The Eclipse is capable of the dual elevator setup with a P-mix but the problem is the trim does not link so it is not the ideal set up. I would probably suggest a y-harness and then reverse one servo by swapping the two outside leads on the pot and the motor wires. The Electron 6 is the best and lightest receiver we have for this type of application.
U2Steve- i don't know, but I doesn't sound good. Send it in and we will check it out.
BEC- Yes, there are some mistakes in the manual like the one on page 25 and probably others but the VR-1 knob is channel #6. Yes there are some switched used for different things so you must take that into consideration when setting up the model. I can e-mail you a list of dealers.

John,
If you have a Hitec transmitter the futaba receiver will be the compatable one. JR absolutely will not be. We are flying T-IFOs in our indoor club at the high school where I teach. You will love them. They are sooooooo tough. The only thing we have managed to break is the rudder. I would consider getting a supply of appropriate sized carbon fiber and build a couple of extras to have on hand. (It only takes a few minutes to make one)

I think you said somewhere else that you were in the UK so that 's channel 76 on 35MHz. If so the 72MHz receivers sold on that site will not work at all, as I said earlier. The channel is a dead giveaway because American channel numbers only go up to 60.
p.s. it's really worth filling in some location information. If you don't say where you're from you'll get information aimed at the US where the majority of people are from. And it's very very different :(.

I have a few Hitec Micro 555 Rx's and I am looking to use them in a 4 ch electric and was wondering since the only 4 ch radio I have is a Futaba will I be ok just getting a crystal that matched the ch of the Tx or is that not a good idea? Coop- Sure, you can use a 4 or 5 cell Nicad or NiMh pack of any capacity. It's no different than any other radio. You will need a different switch part# 58215S to go the a seperate pack. It all depends on your application as to what pack I would recommend.
jah-:D :D :D
John2003- Futaba is compatible with Hitec.
Taiko- While Hitec Korea has purchased Multiplex Germany, Hitec USA has yet to start importing it into the US. We expect to get our first order sometime in March at this time. I would suggest you contact Royal Hobby Dist., the former MPLX distributor and see if they have any available.
billdad1- The first update will have the new QPCM feature added and only a couple other software changes. We hope to address the issue with CROW in the ACRO mode in the next update.
blfinche- Refer to my reply to Taiko.
mtfbwymb20- That will work fine. You can just plug in any channel crystal; there is no need to tune it.
