for a 450, i honestly think Jason Chow (Driftinsequence)
i don't even think the szabos could touch him on a 450. his skills are beyond mastery. i have NEVER seen any one handle trex in the air like him. :D

ive seen nick maxwells videos from rcuniverse and from the align 2006 funfly very cool and i didn't know that my trex could do it.

willhaney, i know its very controverseil but i like to watch out for videos of the best pilots in the world.

glad driftingsequence is local, i want to check him out at the next funfling

There's a ton of great 450 pilots ;D

Google "3D Masters 2007" and look at the 450 class winners to see the "official" best guys. Though there's probably a bunch of great guys who don't compete.

If not the best pilot but one of emerging ones: Justin Chi?

LOL

Poor my little son. He is 4 now (and 4 days) - so it looks like he is going to be now tortured to hate helicopters ;). If this Justin can fly like that - so my son can learn as well! LOL O: )

Bert is one of the best, there is also Colin Bell from team TT. There is also Bobby Watts, Bert Kammerer, Justin Chi, Nick Maxwell, Russ McCutcheon, Alan and Danny Szabo, Brian Regular, Leon Luke..... there are so many good pilots out there, Jason Chow is very good, but there are lots of very good pilots. Who is truly the best? I dunno, and i have seen many of the top pilots fly in person

is there any competitions for 450 helicopters? im a very big wrestling fan and there is the big boys wrestling matches and then there are the smaller ones. ive seen 3d masters and xfc where everyone is flying a 90 but more people have a 450 size. it would be cool to see

also, are there any videos that help with 3d. i find myself stuck now. i can't do much more than some flipping around and inverted flight.

Hey guys, this has nothing to do with who is the best, but since you're talking about 450's, I figure I show you a video I did last week testing the "Scorpion" motor. I am so impressed with the power this motor produces, this is by far the most powerful 450 I have ever flown to date. Let me know what you guys think!

Bert Kammerer

Oh yea Bert K. Freaken Nice.

I just installed one of these Scorpion HK2221-6 motors on my Mini-Titan. I keep telling people this is one of the sickest motors out on the market for 450 heli's, but they don't listen. I compare the motor to a Nue motor, but at 1/3 the cost.

I'm running mine on a 10t though, so I don't kill myself with the 525watts of raw monster power!!! :D

Thanks guys. Yeah, the 11t pinion is a little bit too much head speed. The power is obscene. Unless you're going to fly like a maniac out of control you don't want that pinion. I'm going to play with a 10 and a 9 to see how I like them. I'm only getting 3 minutes now with the 11 tooth and the TP 2100 Extreme v2 packs. I'll let you guys know my opinion on smaller pinions.

Man, and I just got a 10t pinoin for it which now I know will be probably too much headspeed. I'll need 9t for sure. Man, maybe even 8t!!! Anybody know where to get 8t and 9t pinions at 3.17mm shaft size?

Nov 12, 2007, 10:35 PM
You'd have to find the sweet spot on that motor. I know my JGF 500 will bog slightly with a 12 or 13T but with a 14 its ballistic and it doesn't bog at all.

This Scorpion sounds like overkill... and theres nothing wrong with that... :D

I need to get a good tach to check the head speed. On paper this thing should not be going that fast, but for some reason my tach showed almost 4 K. I'm sure the tach is not working right. Hard to tell, I'll post my findings later.

Christmas???? That soo far away. Its only $49 bucks dude. I got mine from RC Dude:

BTW, I tached my head last night at 70% flat throttle curve with 10t pinion and I was running 2650rpm's. I think I'm good to go with this setup. 85-95% throttle curve should put me somewhere at 3000rpm's which is perfecto for me!!! :)

Kyle is an awesome pilot indeed. He has come a long way within the past year. Great dad & son team!

OK, I tached this thing today at 100% throttle with ThunderPower Extreme v2 packs and I got 3800 on the head with the 11 tooth pinion. Will try 10 tooth soon, should have more torque with 10 tooth.

I have been using the Scorpion motors for quite a while now and they perform insane. About 6 months ago when I was first doing testing on the 2221-6 prototype I was just in awe. Now I use the 2221-6 with the 55amp ESC. 11 tooth pinion it ends up with a 3700 headspeed at 90% throttle. I could run 100% but if you pay close attention you will see the motors efficency rating is around 93% where it is at its most efficient. So actually in my opinion I can't tell a difference in power at 90% compared to 100% but I get about 1 more min. of flight time.

I am getting around 6 mins to even 7 mins of 3D with that set-up. Drawing only 2100mAh out of a 2500mAh Flight Power Evo Lite. Insane performance on the new Miniature Aircraft 450.

As most know, www.innov8tivedesigns.com stocks these motors. If you read on the web site you can see the progression of the motors, and it gives good charts on which motor will be the best for you. For some people the 2221-8 motor will be better. It tends to run cooler, and give a little bit longer flight times.

The 2221-6 motor is SPECIFICALLY designed for 325mm-340mm blade length helicopters.

Nick

Edit: Here are some numbers and specs that back up this motor, as you can see the temps of the motor are very very low. This is on the 150main gear and 11 tooth pinion:

New HK-2221-6 Helicopter Motor getting Rave Reviews:
A couple months ago, the Scorpion company received a request for a new helicopter motor with a little more punch than the already popular HK-2221-8 model, for use in the slightly larger 480 class machines that were being introduced. They came back with the new HK-2221-6 model, that has a Kv of 4400, and can handle 50 amps of current on a 3-cell pack for 525 watts of power! Scorpion sponsored test pilot, Nick Maxwell, recently amazed the crowds at a Heli fly-in with his Gazaur Poseidon 480 helicopter, that is powered with one of the new Scorpion HK-2221-6 motors and a Scorpion 55 amp ESC. The temperature that day was 90 degrees, and after 4 minutes of intense 3D flying, the temperature of the motor was only 95 degrees, and the ESC was only 109 degrees! To see this motor in action in Nick's helicopter, please watch the HK-2221-6 Flight Demo Video. For more information on this motor, check out the HK-2221-6 Motor Specs.

Jason Chow
Nov 15, 2007, 04:38 PM
Nick, the motor looks very good. the flight times, the temperature all are fantastic. how do you compare this to your medusa, 28-40-3400?

Nick Maxwell
Nov 15, 2007, 08:39 PM
This kicks the Medusa's butt. It generates about 500RPM more to the rotor head, has in increase in the amount in torque and runs so cool its not even funny.

That Medusa would take skin off after a flight if you touched it. Also I was only getting 4-5 mins with the Medusa. The main thing also with this motor how it treats the batterys so well and the ESC, and itself. Since nothing is really being pushed to hard, that means more life expectency out of the batteries, ESC, motor, etc. From what I understand it takes over 300degrees F to demag this motor. We are only getting within a little under 1/3 of that temp. So the motor, apart from bearings wearing out should, on paper, last forever.

Hi Guys,

I am glad to see that you are enjoying the Scorpion Motors. Nick Maxwell is running a box stock Scorpion HK-2221-6 motor with a stock Scorpion 55 amp ESC with the factory default programming. It is by far the best set-up you can buy for a 450 class heli. The retail price of the motor and ESC together is under $110.00, providing the best bang for the buck out there.

Thanks for the great feedback!

hey nick, this past weekend i got a chance to try the scoporion motor, it is powerful, however im not getting the flight time. running 10t pinion, scorpion 6 motor, align esc, kong power batteries/flight power batteries 2200mah. ran woodies on it also. this was on the mini-titan. got 3 minutes and 30 seconds. the motor ran cool, the battery was hot like the medusa?

Nick Maxwell
Nov 18, 2007, 07:41 PM
The Align ESC is seriously inefficent compared to the Scorpion 55 amps. I have also tried Kong Power. Honestly, they don't live up to their rating. Really the Flight Power or Thunder Power are the way to go. Also I use 2500 mAh packs. So I can draw quite a bit more out of them. Flight Power 2200, not sure on that one as I have never used it. But unless it is a Evo lite, or Evo 25/30 it will not handle this motor as well as the new Flight Power.

Power wise, remember, the better the battery holds it voltage the less amps you are going to pull. Lower V=higher amps.
So if you can get a pack that is 2200mAh, but holds at least 10.5V under load. You will get much better flight times. Usually on most packs you will get a voltage drop of down to 9.5-9.7V, and very few recover well after that happens in a flight. Again, if you can find a pack that can drop that low, then recover to the previous voltage, you gain flight time.

After a full flight I draw roughly 2100-2200mAh and the voltage is at around 10.9-11.2V

On the Mini-titan, I am not sure of the gear ratio. The best gear ratio for duration/ performance is 13.6:1

OK obviously I don't push mine anywhere near what you guys do, but I picked up a kong power battery on Friday .. Its only had 4 cycles so far but even I noticed that the kong power seemed to keep power better right through the flight than my usual Tp2100 PLs .. the flight times were 'about' the same (because of the xtra weight - 80g I think it is .. I got maybe an extra minute) but the kongs are 25c and the TPs are 24c (if I remember)

(And this is after I shorted the Kong battery trying to get the align type balance plug off to swap with a tp type plug :s .. it charged & worked fine today :) It shorted on my finger but the burns are fine too ... :s - Make Kong a touch cheaper & include a balance adapter ;) & you can almost forget about the extra weight)

If they CAN sort the weight out & slim a bit off the price (not a problem for some of us I think lol ) then I like em - so far - fwiw

Altho I did do a max th take off which just resulted in a vertical spin & the stock 40a ESC shutting down .. it was fine after a reset ..
