View Full Version : Question 6V BEC on Castle ESC's???

I'm wondering if it would be possible to have a 6V BEC as an option on the PH line of esc's? Please forgive me as I'm not up on the internal workings of a linear BEC, but could it be something as simple as selecting between 5V and 6v with the Castle Link? Or possibly a switch on the ESC? From what I know of linear BEC's it would actually be easier on the BEC as it isn't dropping the voltage as far and is therefore producing less heat.

I'm asking because I recently went to a 6v Sport BEC (sorry, couldn't wait any longer for the CC BEC :( ) in several of my planes and the increase in speed and torque was sweet. I definitely noticed it in flight. Way faster control surface movement and no blow back on the elevator and rudder. The plane just feels a lot more locked in and precise. The only reason that I can think of for going back to 5v is to run lights.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg...the sport BEC is a switching regulator, not a linear like we use on the Phoenix line. We have our own switching BEC available right now as well. Here's a link. Voltage output is programmable with the Castle Link anywhere from 4.8v to 9v in .1v increments.

Yes I know all about the CC BEC.......I even had my name on the list for a few way back when there was still snow on the ground here. I just couldn't wait any more "two weeks" and went with another brand.

What I'm asking is could it be possible to have the built-in linear bec that's already on the Phoenix esc's have an output of 6v? What currently regulates these linear bec's to 5v's? Are they regulated by software or would it require a hardware change to up them to 6v?

Thanks Joe!

A switching regulator would probably add $20 to the cost of an ESC. I like the lower cost and the flexibility of adding my own external ESC.

I want to know if a linear regulator can be set at 6v instead of 5v?

If this is possible maybe Castle can put that option in their next firmware upgrade. That may cost less than an external BEC.

No, the regulators are fixed voltage output. It would be technically possible to use a 6V version, or re-design the circuitry to use an adjustable version instead, but probably wouldn't happen due to low demand.

In the car market, the demand for a 6v BEC is way bigger than for a 5v BEC. All car servos are fine running off 6v, maybe except for some weird Futaba ones. It would be helpful to the ESC, too, since the (input - BEC output) difference would be smaller, meaning less power to be dissipated as heat. I do realize that this thread is about the Phoenix ESCs, but I just wanted to counter Andy's response :).

Hi all,
I come back in this old thread because I have the same problem:

Is now possible to change the BEC voltage from 5V to 6V on my Phoenix 25A ESC? Has this ESC a 7805 for the BEC (one or two in paralel)?
Have I to change the 7805 with a 7806? Is it possible?

Thank you very much in advance for the answers!!!
