All Electronics is one place. I googled 12v 12ah gel cell and got a lot of hits.

go to mapquest.com and search on "batteries" near your address...look for stores like BatteriesPlus which specialize in the product.

I go to my local Energizer dealer. Check out their website for the nearest location. I buy my 6v10amp/hr sla batteries from them, saves on shipping. They have a nice selection including lots of 12v.

You might also try an alarm or security company. I discovered that the fire and alarm panels often have SLA back-up batteries which look (to me) suspiciously like...tugboat batteries :D
I was told that these batteries are replaced every couple years. Perhaps you can check out some electrical parts houses and you might find some "deals" or at least some recycled batteries with some life left in them. ;)

Check at Depot or Lowes in the electrical dept by the emergency exit lights/ballasts.

I'm planning on getting an emergency backup lighting system for my shop, and have looked at them in Home Depot. :)
And you say they don't carry the batteries? Odd---.

Are Sealed Lead-Acid batteries rechargeable?

I noticed Home Depot has 6 volt for about $12.00 each. The "Hardware Store" (remember buy local.. ) wants $19.00. I keep telling myself I am buying quality and keeping the $$ in the community.

My Lowe's has them in stock in the emergency backup lighting section.

Are Sealed Lead-Acid batteries rechargeable?
Yes. Because they are sealed, and assuming you would like them to stay that way, use a dedicated SLA charger and avoid charging them in an enclosed space such as a sealed hull.

Is a 12v12AH Yuasa battery. Its a security/standby product. At least with a part number you have a chance to search. Oddly, when doing such a search from over here, I wind up with links over there, but in this case, not.

As stated earlier these 12 and 6volt SLA batteries are intended for security backup lighting. They are fed a constant trickle of current as they are hardwired. The only time they dont have the trickle charge is when theres a power failure, and they become the sole power for the lights. So, the best way to charge them is by a slow charge until there fully charged and then a constant trickle. Even though its probably fine to leave the batteries on the charger all the time, I usually dont. I put them on a trickle charger every couple of weeks. These batteries should be kept close to fully charged at all times. A SLA battery requires a charger for SLA batteries and I use a Werker 6V1000, which stands for 6volt 1000mA or a charge rate of 1amp.

this is the only charger i have at the moment

Charge four battery packs at once—with one affordable AC charger
Adjustable current on all four independent outlets offers 10-500 mAh charging versatility. Use just one, or all four simultaneously for fast/slow/trickle charging of NiCds ranging from tiny AA cells for flashlights to large 12V lead-acid batteries for field boxes.
just found this on google

I have two of these. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCJG7&P=ML
They will charge several types of batteries but you will need a 12 volt DC power supply for power.

I just placed an order for some Powerpoles from my regular supplier, Powerwerx. I noticed that they also have a 12V 12Ah battery:

got my 6v sla's from home depot. they were in the lighting section as noted in a previous post... thanks! took a little searching to find them (check the aisle ends) and they weren't in boxes or anything, so they should stand out.
i had gotten a 12v from my lhs but it turns out my tug can't handle its weight. but, i did get a nifty charger there for $10. charges sla overnight.

Would this charger work for SLA batts? It usually goes on sale for $19.99 every other week.

I have a 6v/12v charger but it will only charge at 2amp on 12 volt at its lowest setting. I made a jumper with alligator clamps so I can connect the 6volt SLA's in series and then charge at 12v at the lowest 2 amp setting. I am sure this is less than ideal but it got the boat in the water. I have heard that the 500-1000ma trickle chargers are kinder to the cells....which has been echoed here.
I did try to quick charge the batteries individually at the 5amp 6v setting. I would NOT recommend this...which was also echoed here on this thread..... :o

What type of connectors do you use to connect the battery to the ESC etc.. I know with 7.2 stick batteries I use the Tamyia connectors. This is new to me. My current project will require a 12v to run the two motors and sound system. Thanks

I use Deans plugs...
http://www.wsdeans.com/products/plugs/ultra_plug.html
Your LHS should stock them.. the car and Aircraft guys use them in preferance to the Tamiya plugs.
REMEMBER though the female plug goes to the battery so it cant short out on anything ;)

With pre-built packs, you have a safeguard against connecting the wrong way round. With an SLA you have a choice of terminals. Always check that the black wire goes to the black terminal, and the red wire to the red terminal, helps avoid the one-shot smoke unit syndrome.

My Home Depot sells the batteries you are talking about so your's should too. If they sell the emergency lights they have to have the batteries too. Also don't those emergency lights have little chargers in them to keep the battery up? It's true that those batteries only last a few years but I've noticed that if the power goes out the emergency lights come on and stay on untill the battery goes dead. Then when the power comes back on the battery gets charged up again so it will work the next time there is a power failure.

You might contact: http://www.power-sonic.com/ and see if there is a local retailer that carries there stuff.
You might also try using http://local.com I think it is a great sight to find local stuff.
That is how I found a 6V 4.5ah for $9,
I didn't know about http://www.batteriesplus.com/t-storeloc.aspx
Looks like they make a few.
PS-12120 12.0 Amp Hour found a few sites $28.80
PS-12120L 12.0 Amp Hour
Good Luck!

Go to an Interstate Battery "all" store.
I just bought a 10 AH 6V for 21 dollars and a 7 AH 6V for $25 sealed lead acid(SLA)or check them out online.
I ran my 35" CG Cutter yesterday for about an hour and after, the volts were 6.1 and she was still running strong. The SLA take longer to charge but the charge lasts longer.

I dont know if you have them in your area but the 600 amp jump starters have a 12 volt 12ah battery inside plus they have the required charger circuit (overnight charge /very slow but can be left connected). They are the cheapest way in Australia to get that size SLA. Just strip every thing out of the case.

Nick
