Cutty Sark

Has anyone heard anything lately about the Cutty Sark? Has there been progress in the restoration?Pictures?

From what I heard, most of the ship was disassembled and removed for the renovation. So there is a good possiblity of restoring the ship to its formere glory.

However, there is a big debate on the cost, and public opinion doesn't seem interested in rebuilding the Cutty Sark.

On a side note, the US Navy has thousands of acres of oak (http://www.nps.gov/guis/historyculture/the-live-oak-story.htm) reserved for ship construction, so if the Constitution ever needs to be rebuilt, they have the wood... :)

According to the latest edition of Wooden Boat Magazine, there are still plans to put the CS back together again- apparently most of the original pieces were saved and the steel framing for the ship is in resonable condition- they would like to reopen the CS to the public in 2010 (sounds agressive to me!!!) Sounds like they will need about $70.4 million to complete the restoration work that was already under way and repair the fire damage...

I was looking at the CS website a few years ago and they had this key fob for sale that is made from the ships foremast after it was replaced with a new one. Pretty neat I think.
They were also selling pieces of wood from the hull if I remember right so maybe they will be doing that again now. Good stuff for a model.
That fire was a terrible thing to happen to such a beautiful ship. I guess it could have been a lot worse though. I hope they can continue with the restoration.
Also here's a picture of another glorious British ship thats preserved somewhere over htere. The HMS Victory. My grandfather served on this ship when he was a young man. Pete

If you want to do something to support the restoration process you can go online to the Cutty Sark web site and look at the things they are selling like the key fob above.These things help to finance the project and you get something in return. Prices are right I think and you can use your credit card for any purchase. It's fast and easy. Pete

Had the opportunity to take a lot of detail pics of the Cutty Sark when in London a few years ago, before the dismantling started.
Have some rigging, deck, interior, etc shots.
Would take me awhile to edit for web and post, but will if there is interest.
Maybe there are already a lot out there on some other site, so I don't want to duplicate...

Given England's nautical heritage, I can't imagine that the Cutty Sark project wouldn't be a nationally popular endevour.
Great news that an optimistic, dedicated group is continuimg the restoration.

Tha Cutty Sark trust has been given 10 Million UK Pounds ($20m) to aid restoration of the Cutty Sark.

Shame the same figure (and more) cant be found for the City of Adelaide... :mad:

You would think with all the gazillionaires running around worthwhile, nonpolitical projects like this would be funded with no problem. What's $20 mill to Warren Buffet? When I make my first billion I'll do things like that. ;)

I think a portion of the proceeds from every bottle of a certain brand of scotch should go towards her restoration... :p
