View Full Version : Question Flaperons on Easy Glider?

Hi guys a quick question. Would the Easy Glider benefit from the use of flaperons when thermaling? This is a great glider and I would like to improve it if I can. And learn the finer points of thermaling. Thank you in advance for your help.

I only use them for landing. I have flapperons and spoilerons set up on a side slider on my 9C. I tend to use the spoilers more than flaps.

I have not used them while thermaling.

Yes, it is a great glider.

I setup my EZG with camber/reflex ailerons on my Evo slider. Works great. A bit of camber for when in lift, a bit of reflex when in sink. Also did the flaperons for landing, also great, shortens the landing. And, spoilerons for getting down. All are good :D

I added flaps to mine.. :) Haven't flown it yet, however..

Thank you all for your replys.

Guz, As I am fairly new to gliders I have to ask; what are camber/reflex? I know what spoilerons and flaps can do I think camber changes the wing to create more lift. But the reflex is a mistery to me. And how do you do all that with only one set of ailerons?

Thanks again,
Phil

As you noted, we drop the trailing edge slightly, only a couple of degrees, maybe 1/16" to create a more "under cambered" wing shape to increase lift while in a thermal. Normally this is done with full span ailerons or ailerons and flaps that are tied together by a computer radio.

Reflex is the same but in the opposite direction. Some, but not all airfoils penetrate into the wind better if the trailing edge is raised slightly. This is used to run quickly thorugh sink or to come back against the wind.

Since we can't really modify the full trailing edge of the EG, you can't really do full camber and reflex but you can do partial with the ailerons. How much it helps, considering that it is only partial, I don't know.

I wouldn't worry about it until you're really comfortable flying the model with just regular ailerons..

I just want to thank all of you for your remarks. As suggested I will keep things stock until I feel it is time to move on. Sometimes I want to run before I walk. :o
Any other remarks would be welcome.
Thanks again,
Phil

These forums are great as I don't have a mentor to learn from. :D

A simple mix that I like, and I use on lots of planes, is to mix about 5% throttle to elevator, so that if you pull the throttle closed, the elevator will rise ever so slightly, and if you push the throttle foreward, the elevator goes down about the same, nearly imperceptable amount.

The net effect is a nice thermal or speed setting thats very intuitive. Wanna go fast to penetrate back up wind? Push the throttle forward. Wanna thermal? Pull it back.

slopemeno, I have read about doing that but I don't think I can do it with my Flash 5X Tx :(

I have come to believe if I want to continue into gliders a new Tx in in my future.
