Air Combat

So I know this has been discussed several times, but I'm thinking about creating an air combat setup. Something that would detect a hit and decrease throttle to like 25% for 5 seconds then back to normal or blink lights. What would you all use for the guns part of the circuit? Infrared? Ultrasonic? Anyone know the ranges on those?
