Hi all:

I am trying to repair a Dell Inspiron 6000 motherboard PP12L. It is doing weird things. It works OK in DOS mode most of the time, but when it tries to do anything complex like install or load windows it gets a lot of errors. I pulled it apart and noticed the air vent for the CPU was completely blocked. So before I give up I would like at least to try a replacement CPU chip and a memory stick.

When I can get the Dell diagnostic to run (Boot up quickly from CD) It runs forever with no errors. So who knows?

I do not want to pay an arm and a leg for it as it is just a test. I can even return them after I have diagnosed the problem. If it is the mother board itself it will just get tossed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try running a Knoppix or Ubuntu live distro to test the RAM/CPU. This wont need a hard drive so that would eliminate the drive.
Sounds like a HDD anyways.

If it has issues running a live distro with no HDD installed, then it's probably RAM.
I'd also go into bios and disable USB, sound, NIC , etc to eliminate other items.

I may have some RAM and or HDD.. I'll have to look around.

or you might want to just replace the cpu fan first i have seen a computer did a lot of weird things and the only problem was a broken lock on the cpu fan :)

CPU Fan is fine. Memtest86 runs forever. HD is fine. CD is fine.

I think I will just sell the good bits on eBay.

It is a shame because the screen is flawless. The DVD/CD Writer works great. The Keyboard and all the other bits are fine. I am sure the memory is fine also. passes Memtest86. I will keep the hard drive as it works fine.

Perhaps I can just sell it for spares. Too much hassle to part it out on eBay.

How much would you want for it? I might be interested in it.
