I'll start by saying I love the larger scale electrics. I often times buy planes and convert them to e power. Building time is spent running my business now a days. Well here are a couple of my daily flyers. All are powered with AXI motors.

You guys need to see the diamonds on my wifes finger. Just kidding, she is cool about all the airplane stuff. Better than my old days of ridding the Harley all over the place. This way everyone knows where I am,most of the time. Thanks for the nice words on my planes. I did not build them as my building days are spent running my tool and cutter shop. the guys I get them from are amazed I am converting them to electric. I love it when we go to a fun fly and pull out some of the larger planes and the gas guys say stuff like,,that will never get off the ground as an electric. Then they see them fly next to their gas plane and watch how some of my warbirds pass them up. Long live the electric guy!!!!

I am about to buy one of these Great Planes Curtiss Hawk P-6E. Here is a built up kit that I fly with a 4130/16. When I first flew it it had never been flown. I got the plans with it and set up the C/G like they called. About 3/4" to far back caused me sooooo much trouble. Got it back down, moved the C/G maybe 3/4" forward and it now flys great. It is a very old build and should be retired. Anyway here is a shot of it.

Thanks, I will. This is actually 1/4 scale N28 #3, #1 was a modified Balsa USA kit that met its demise due to a bad RX switch, #2 is still flying and competing.
They now all have redundant RX power.
My uncle has never flown one of the Nieuports, he leaves that to my father.

Interesting, we chose power systems very close in specs to each other. The hyperion motor were using is a touch lower in KV than your AXI. I get <1000 watts on the APC 18x10 and around 1400 watts into the 18x12. I have a 19x10 Xoar to try next. the Saito 150 never sees anwhere near full throttle in #2.
Ive also fitted a longer shaft on the motor to get the back of the prop 1.5 inches ahead of the fan on the front of the motor, should hide behind the dummy engine.
15 minutes on 3500 mah? Your getting me excited! These WWI bipes seem to float effortlessly though dont they.
BTW #2 and 3 are completely scratch-built.

Bladerunner,
Thanks for starting this thread! Very nice fleet of large electrics you have there. Also some other very nice models showing up by other contributors.
By the way, Bladerunner, what does your DR-1 weigh? I am contemplating a new lightweight, (less than 10 pounds), project upon which I would like to use a belt reduction drive with an outrunner. I need to turn about a 21 inch prop, but need to keep the power system reasonably light.
I too like the larger models, due to old eyesight and reflexes, and so far am only flying e-power. My models need to be slow, and good flyers, though!

Bladerunner,
Your P-6E looks great - very detailed. It looks like you have the scale interplane pushrod system on the ailerons. I had thought of modifying the Great Planes kit to feature that, but decided it wasn't practical. Might go back and do it someday. I can highly recommend the GP P-6E as a subject for E-conversion, there is a HUGE space under that cowl in which virtually any battery configuration will fit. It's one of the simplist, most straight-forward conversions I've done.
Which kit is your Vega from? That's a plane I've always liked.

Wow guys! Some beautiful planes there! So far, my biggest electric "standard plane" is my 59" Lark X pattern plane. It has a 4120/16 AXI and 6S 4200s in it. I want to convert my 60" Cermark Pitts to "E" power so I can get rid of the Super Tigre 3250, just havent gotten around to it yet.
Then there is my latest 156" flying wing build, while it does not quite fit into any group like the gorgeous birds you guys posted, it is big, it is electric, its a twin, and it has 10S power, and, well, it WILL be pretty dang good looking eventually.

The plane I am sitting next to was an astro hog, 72" wing. We were flying in sorta a dog fight when I was heading straight down inverted from my view,,,when I wanted to pull up I saw a man walking right in the path of where my plane was heading. With the G force I was about to put on the wing I thought if it should happen to break the wing, the person(who should have not been where he was) would have been right in its path. If the guy would not have been there I would have pulled out about 15 feet over the deck, done that move a million time but not with someone about to be in my airplanes path. In just a split second I decided to let it keep on its path, straight into the ground. Being a member of the field I thought safty over chance would be a better decision. Can you even imagine what would happen to a person if hit by that size of airplane. Not to mention the club would be in danger of loseing the field.

Thanks for your comments. I love these electric planes. I live about 5 mins from where I fly and it is an electric only field. Our electrics have gotten bigger and bigger so now we have had to join other clubs to fly some of the larger electrics.
The Fokker DR 1 is a heavy 23 pounder. The DR 1 keeps you on your toes to say the least. I was flying it with a 4130 geared 2 to 1, it flew scale but I will not fly her again untill I put a 5330/24 AXI in her with some lipolys.
With your eyes in not such good shape and liking big planes i would pick up the Hanger 9 106" cub. I am about to pick one up myself. They are beautiful!
About your 21" prop and weight concern, I fly my 22 pound Stinson Reliant with a 22/12 prop with a AXI 5330/24 with good results, oh, 10 cells of lipoly, 8000mah packs give the Stinson 2, 9 min flights no problem.
Hope this might help you out. If you have any more question please ask away. from Don Hofeldt aka Bladerunner

I have wanted one of these P6-E ARF's for a long time. I hear they are going to stop selling them soon????? Glad I got one, Thanks Bob! Bladerunner, actually another rcgroups member with the handle "feathermerchant" is flying a GP Hawk with an Axi 5330/18. If you do a search you should find the video of his plane - excellent flight performance plus a truly awesome onboard sound system! I elected to save 5 1/2 ounces by going with the lighter 5320/28. A lower sustained current capacity, but my Hawk cruises at 1/2 or lower throttle. Note that the 5330/F3 you mention has a much higher KV number (235 RPM/V) than either the 5320/28 (249) or the 5330/18 (259). If you wish to turn a prop of the scale diameter, 18-inches, one of the lower KV motors is the better choice IMO. My P-6E has very good takeoff acceleration and climb - but it's not a Pitts Special and I don't expect it to be. Just a golden age classic that gets attention at every field for its remarkable realism in the air.

here are a couple pics of my F4U-4 Corsair, 55" wingspan, ~ 6Lbs AUW, powered by a HiModel BM3520 outrunner, the battery is two 4S 2200 LiPo packs in parallel (4S2P), 14x8x3 prop. I only have 5 flights on her, flies great! very fast in flight, because of stall speed it has to land fairly fast, it needs flaps. I bought it from Raidentech.com and converted it from nitro to electric.

Scale profile but I don't do scale finishes, I prefer flying scale to static scale.
The B25 is at least 14 years old, (what's that in model aircraft years :D ).
Span is 93", she has retracts and drops two bombs from an operating bomb bay. Flies happily with Speed 600 12v motors using 3.6:1 belt drives and on two 7 cell packs of 3300 nimh.
The B17 is between one and four years old. She go started four years ago and has been on and off the building board so many times. But she did have her first flight this month, and looked the part.
Span 100" and home-made retracts fitted, (one of the reasons for for the delay). She also flies quite impressively with Speed 600 7v2 motors using 2.3:1 belt drives also on two 7 cell packs of 3300 nimh.

Have you or Denny tried those A123 cells I keep hearing about or are you stuck in the Thunder Power rut like me? They are supposed to take a heck of a beating and still keep on ticking. Did you replace that Corsair? Walt said you did an inverted low pass and pulled up. I lost my H9 Corsair a couple weeks ago - don't know why... both batteries smashed. The replacement is almost ready. I bought a third one as a back up. Finally got my Spitfire maidened then put it back in the shop for new retracts and added split flaps and radiators. Its been up twice - a pound heavier but flys just the same as before. Put that shop on autopilot and come out to Fairview some Tuesday morning.

Here is an 81" wingspan Ryan arf that used to be very popular a few years back, previously powered by a G23 now powered by an axi 4130-16, a 10s2p A123 pack, rtf weight is 13lbs (lots of epoxy repairs), 1200 watts, 13-16 minutes duration depending on how energetic the flight is.. 13 minutes is continuous loops and rolls. Plane does inside and outside loops with no problems, and has fairly good vertical. Owned and flown by Jeff Johnson.
I would have used a 5330 on this plane but Jeff wanted to use the 4130-16, apparently is has enough power. He is very happy.. first flight was this sunday.

I dont remember the prop size, around 12-13 inches, the 4130-16 is a fairly high Kv motor to be using a 10s A123 pack, you dont want to exceed 1200watts by much.. the 4130-20 is a better choice. The 4130-16 is a popular size motor for the hangar 9 warbirds, usually with a 6s lipo pack and a 16" prop.
Jeff is a very good pilot, he has no trouble getting off our grass field, I think the wheels are about 14 inches apart.. wich looks odd in such a big plane :) The wheelpants do pick up some grass and they do expose about half the 4" wheels. This is a much repaired gas flyer, lots of epoxy, a new one would be a couple of pounds or more lighter.
Herm
I've got one of those on the bench for conversion. This is very timely. How big a prop are you/Jeff using? Any advice on landing that 81" wingspan with those wheels spaced just 4 inches apare?

I also fly this plane in military version, red and white one still in the box. I used the 4130/??high count untill I wore it out. I think the 5320 would be great too. Landing this big ol bird is not really a problem as it will float in like a trainer. The pictured plane has countless flightsimg on it. I did however have to replace the wing once due to flying in high winds and turning like a fool and doing this just to many times.

Thanks, those props are pricy but good.. so the motor is a 5330-24, not the 5330-18 as in the caption?.. you like the setup on the S Stearman?, good duration?
Herm
Herm,
I've tried a number of props and I have settled on a Mejzlik 22x12e which produces a top 2100 watts at 53 amps using this setup:
2, TP 5000 mAh 5s 18.5v lipos in series (10s)
AUW 17 lbs.
motor: Axi 5330-24
ESC: Phoenix 110HV

yes Axi 5330/24
the duration is plenty and the power is more than scale but less than ridiculous.

The Lockheed Vega was a scratchbuild. I did not build it. I got it from a man in Texas. He likes to build and I like to fly, works out well for us. The landing struts work very well on the dirt field that I fly from. I have a 4120 AXI on this plane and a 14/10 prop. A little over sized on the prop but it flys at 1/2 throtal for 3 7 min flights easy on the 8000 mah lipoly pack I have in it.img

Great group of guys who are just amazed at seeing giant scale electric airplanes fly (actually most any electric plane fly). :)The Extra 260 flies fantastic and has plenty of power for 3D flight and IMAC pattern maneuvers.

Tim's flying what is actually a pretty early prototype. Over the past months, we've re-designed the airplane a couple of times. The final version is expected for Spring '08. Weight is slightly under 15 lbs. w/ a DA50. Electrics are coming in around 15-16. Wing area is 1440 sq.

Figured I'd add some updated pictures of my 13 foot span Ohio Combat SRT/10. We did the run up of the twin Atlas 5030/16s with 18x12 APC props on 10S and WOW does this thing have some power! 5600+ watts of power!
Soon the custom retracts will be done and we will get the maiden accomplished with plenty of video.

Yeah, Karl, I can just see it now, 30 Zagis out there bouncing off the SRT/10 as it flys by laughing at them! lol :) Combat is probably NOT in this planes future! ;)
sun flyer, if you look closely, you'll see that the outboard wing tips are detatchable. So the plane breaks down into 3 pieces for transport.
The setup is as follows:
Twin Hobby -Lobby Atlas 5030/16 outrunners
Twin APC 18x12 props (shown) For flying it will use APC 20x13 counter rotating props
Twin Castle Creations HV-85s
Twin Castle Creations "CC-BEC's"
Twin Castle Creations Berg 7 recievers
Twin Max Amps 10S 5000 mah lipos (10S2P)
6 Scanner-RC metal gear race servos on the control surfaces (over 40lbs of torque on the control surfaces!)
Custom made 6 wheel, air retracts (not installed yet) with a steerable nose wheel.
The plane will end up weighing somewhere around 40-50lbs RTF. But, with over 45 square feet of wing area, it should float along nice and slow if I want to.
That pretty much sums it up. On a wattmeter, it showed over 5600 watts (static) on the 18x12 props. Im sure it will be over 6000 watts on the 20x13s.
Pitch speed is around 118mph, acctual speed should be 80mph to 100mph give or take.

Yeah, I used to have a HUGE (38 foot) enclosed trailer and a 1 ton Dodge dually... since those are sold now due to my upcoming deployment, I now have an old 1/2 ton Dodge truck and a flat bed trailer. So, I built a big... BIG box from wood to carry it in on the flat bed trailer. Heck, the lumber for the box cost me more than most of my other planes cost!

Hi Tianci
The 100amp Duelsky esc is rated for 6s lipo packs. I believe running c123 cells in a 8s configuration may be the reason I have not experienced any problems.

Tim Davis built this beautiful 747 with Northwest Airlines livery. 4 EDF's powered by 4 ESC each tied to their own separate 3s, 6000 mAh lipo from CommonSense RC.

Flies great as the video attests:
Click here to watch Maiden-Flight-7x7-Airliner (http://media.putfile.com/Maiden-Flight-7x7-Airliner)
We also maidened our long suffering project a KMP P-38 which had air retracts and power problems that stretched the build to over a year. In the end she flew great with plenty of power for its 23 lbs AUW from twin AXI 4130/20's, 2, Jeti77 opto ESC's, APC 16x10 props and a common 8s, 7000 mAh power source tucked in the nose of the center pod. Lot's of power and plenty of vertical until the elevator servo stopped working and she augered in for a total loss. All components survived including the 4 TP lipos (whew!) so perhaps a rebuild is in the works. KMP's stock elevator setup is too weak IMHO. Several build threads suggest using twin elevator servos (one in each boom) using 4-40 Golden Rod connectors. KMP suggests using a single servo mounted in the horizontal stabilizer itself. We used a thin wing Hitec metal gear servo and I'm sure it couldn't take the strain, failed and led to the crash. Live and learn. I never did like that elevator setup. I should have listened to my good sense but no, I had to fly...woe is me.
