View Full Version : Current draw of micro servos used with retracts?

I'm using micro servos to operate retracts, but, according to the Futaba 9C manual, "A regular servo used for mechincal retracts will continue to draw full power the entire time..." I can see how it might be so with heavy, freely-moving gear. But what if the retract has its own lock in the up position, or if the gear is light enough and there is sufficient friction present in the retract mechanism that the gear would stay up on its own, or nearly so?

Thanks,
Jeff

If you carefully adjust the servo links so that there is no stalling at the full up or down positions, then the servo will enter an idle mode. In this scenario, current draw is about 10 to 20mA for non-digital servos, so its impact is minimal.

However, if the servo is allowed to stall, it will draw several hundred milliamps. Just adjust the retract mechanics to prevent that issue and check it from time to time.
