(Oldtribefan & WoodyBob, please don't look)... :o

You may remember the Original Hillbilly Packing Crate:

The Racing Runabout is short enough to not require splicing two tubs together... but it is pretty hokey, being internally braced with cut up foam kiddie swim boards. Works though- boat is protected in the car from sliding/falling objects (seen how I drive?), and protected from dust in between runs (seen how I sand?).

The foam, being kind of spongey, needed gusseting to keep from lozenging (technical terms). It holds the boat above the cradle, and keeps it from shifting around.

What? Me embarrassed? Yes! I saw Oldtribefan's barrelback carrier, fashioned from a hard-case golf club carrier- nice! And WoodyBob's nice case is elsewhere here on the board, I believe...

Nothing at all wrong with the "Son of the hillbilly packing crate", Pat! These work great for packing the boats for road trips- simple and worry free- there is no excuse for not taking your C*C to the lake for summer vacation- :)

How are you at carving/building with foam blocks? We have a local manufacturer that builds floating docks using huge foam blocks (any size required, actually). A little 'wheeling/dealing' can get a foam block that would hold/contain a mid-sized car (I have no idea how you'd transport the thing though). Some imaginative 'carving' would yield a shipping container that'd hold almost anything.
Another local manufacturer makes those plastic covered park benches/tables. They will 'dip' almost anything if it'll fit in their dipping tank, sort of.
Sounds a lot like one of those "Rube Goldberg" (or maybe Escher(sp)?) thingys, huh? Yeah, it is. Also not cheap! My imagination is a dangerous thing...

When choosing a foam, always check it for stickiness to your model's finish. Set the painted surface (or a test surrogate!) on the foam with some weight, and give it a day. If the foam sticks, don't use it.

I've had good luck with whatever the stuff is in pool noodles. Structurally firm, yet pliant and soft on the surface, and no stickiness. Closed cells keep it from soaking up water.

BTW, "Goop" is great for sticking foam to the plastic tub.
