Like the 'Ismanstorp' castle or fortfied community we managed to visit another site on the same island (Öland) a few weeks ago.

This castle/fortification is called Eketorp and it has been restored into what it is thought to have looked like - half of the site by 300 AD and the other half resembling the fortification around 1000 AD. The actual remains would have looked like Ismanstorp but here complete house have been reconstructed and also the ring wall has been rebuilt.

After an hours drive we found that it was windy, very dark clouds and a bit misty at the same time. Not the ideal circumstances for AP:ing, but since we only had one chance I used my Optio S4 and gave it a shot anyway.

Here are the results - given the circumstances I am very pleased. I don't think that any of my other (higher MP) AP cameras would have given better pictures.

Enjoy!

Nice shots Icebear! It's interesting to see other styles of castles or fortresses.

Great job and nice pictures Bjorn. It was great you dealt with the adverse conditions and were able to get the shots anyway.

How does it devide up? I imagine the 300 AD part is the more sparse half and the 1000 AD part is the more built up half. Is that correct?

Thanks srsmalley and Dan!

It's good to have a camera that works "anytime", even if it has less pixels. I just wish my A20 had worked that well during not so perfect conditions.

You are quite right - the less built up area is the half that which is built up like it is supposed to have looked around 300 AD. The long house was for both people and animals. Back then they shared the same roof - and we're not talking about cats & dogs:)...

Bjorn,

Excellent photos.

It looks like there was a second ring outside of the restored one.

Is this construction style only found on this island?

Thanks Tom!

I think there is only one 'ring' - could be that a road gives te impression of a second one.

There are severral fortifications like this one on the island, but I don't know if there are any remains on the mainland.
It could be that the geographic position made it more important to be able to defend the village. It's a good question and I will try to find out!

That is a very interesting choice those people made for the structure.
Looks like it is as much to keep the critters in as to keep undesirable people out?

It didn't say anything about it on the information posters, but you never know :) :) :)
