View Full Version : Discussion You don't "loose" a plane

Sorry but this incorrect spelling is more rampant here than crash stories ... There are loose women and parts can come loose, but you don't loose a plane or a part.. you LOSE it...

Very true, couldn't agree more. But history has shown that people are more fervent about defending their ignorance than making the effort to spell correctly....

Well, what if you have a control line plane flying around, the line is nice and taut, and then it breaks? I'm sure that's what they mean when they say they "loose" a plane.

Exactly-if a wing bolt or motor mount becomes loose-you loose the plane, then lose it. I am sure that is what is meant :p .

You loose an aeroplane every time you release it, such as during a hand launch for instance. Just as you might loose off a volley of shots at a target.
Not the same thing as losing it though, which is probably what you're getting at.

Loose and lose have to be the biggest misuse I see here....with the others mentioned in a battle for a close second place..lol
There is the "course and coarse" argument as well....and let us not forget the "here and hear" or the oldie but goodie...."sense and since" debacle...haha!
It sometimes annoys me, but then I remind myself I am certainly no Rhode's scholar myself . :p
Oh....and how could I overlook the infamous "your and you're" tragedy.

Ben:
Maybe he was quoting a different book...
I seem to recall that "loose the dogs" or "loose the hounds" has been used (with assorted variations) in a lot of different books.
****************
All we are seeing with the misspellings and use of incorrect words is... the level of competency of the teachers in our modern public education system.
In some areas, the children don't have to even show up to class to get "promoted" to the next grade. "We can't hurt the child's self esteem by holding them back! What would their friends say?"
Government has never been known for efficiency. The more the government controls education, the worse the system gets.
Sure, average SAT scores are going up. We have ever increasing drop-out rates. The percentage of children of any given age who actually take the test has continuously declined. Since the ones who are more likely to do well on the test are the ones more likely to still be taking it, the average score can go up even with the quality of education the average student receives declining.
You can prove anything you want with statistics... just limit the sample group.

For those of us using the Firefox browser, there's a great built-in spell checker that will check your spelling as you type.
Granted, it won't catch the sound-alike words (like 'there' or 'their' or 'they're', 'to' or 'too' or 'two', 'son' or 'sun', 'break' or 'brake', 'your' or 'you're', and my favorite, using 'then' for 'than' or vice versa, etc) that are spelled correctly when misused, but at least it catches those errors when our fingers outpace our brain and we type 'teh' instead of 'the'... :p

Seriously, why do people feel the need to correct others spelling and grammar? Not everyone (such as myself) have a degree in English. Heck most don't even have a high school degree or equivalent.
Stop for a second and just consider what someone who lacks the skills you may have must feel like when they try to express their thoughts into words, only to be slammed and ridiculed.
It can be a positive thing to correct and help someone but you don't have to humiliate someone for their lack of skills in this area. Most who suffer the brunt of this will never post again or may never return. (which I'm sure would please the grammar police to the fullest) (but what would they have to keep them busy)
You never know what the other person may have had to sacrifice in their life to not have acquired this skill. Maybe they had to work to be able to eat from the age of 12, or maybe they are not from this country and did not have the exposure to the education that you may have. What ever the case may be, what makes someone feel better about demoralizing another human being? I just do not understand people.
Now if this were a English & Grammar forum then I could understand, but it is not. It is an RC forum! Where people who share the same passion for the hobby congregate. To learn and share news, ideas other things related to how we spend our precious free time enjoying our hobby. Nobody knows everything (sure seems to be many of them here who think they do).
Stop and think about how you would feel if you were the one who had no idea about the topic of discussion and asked a simple question about the topic, only to have maybe misspelled or not formed a proper sentence and the replies you received were a subtle "your a moron" reply without even addressing the original question asked. Seen it here on this and other forums a million times.
The way I see it is the grammar police have several options to choose from,
1) Ignore the post/poster and move on if it bothers you so much
2) Because your educated you can assemble what the poster was trying to communicate, answer the question and maybe offer some corrections politely to improve their abilities for later posts
3) Continue to be an :censored: , ridicule and humiliate the person so you can have your 2 minutes of relief from your own miserable life for just that moment
The sad fact is most of the grammar police choose option 3. Just because they can and they do it with all the pride they can muster. It is almost the same mentality used by the bully that throws rocks at the blind people at the bus stop, but because they can flaunt their elite educational skills that makes it justifiable and socially acceptable to them. Not to mention it just humors the hell out of them for that brief moment at another poor soles expense.
Myself, I have some of the poorest grammar and English skills. My posts can keep the grammar police busy for an eternity and make them refill their Prozac prescriptions like clock work. I'm thick skinned and really do not give a hoot when they correct my errors or how they do it. I will continue to post with my poor skills and just ignore the derogatory replies.
Remember people, this is about RC and not about how you can form a proper sentence or decide to use "loose/lose" "there/their" "where/ware" and so on. If it bothers you that much, act like an adult and ignore it and move on with your life. Better yet just answer the original poster about the topic at hand and show just how smart you really are!

Yesterday out on the lake we saw an affluent family of six with a brand new bowrider/ski boat...The children were attempting to water ski..The first child was about 9 years old and let go of the tow rope immediately when the father gave the boat full power.. A cheer went up from the rest of the family inside the boat. I looked at my wife and said "why are they applauding him? he LET GO!".. The second , third, fourth and fifth attempts were exact repeats of the first.. When the kid finally got back in the boat the positive reinforcement he received baffled me.. "good job son".. "way to go Drew!".. etc. etc... This must be an example of the "everyone is a winner" attitude that is so prevelant with the treatment of todays youth. When I was learning to waterski as a kid, my dad got pretty pissed off after the second time I failed to get up.. I held on for dear life the third time and got up. It was only THEN that I got a cheer from the rest of my family and a "way to go" when I got back on the boat.. I suppose the same is true with school grades (if they even use them anymore), positive reinforcement for poor performance or equal praise for lousy work.

You can say that again. I only remember that quote because of two years of high school Latin. Try to find Latin in todays "educational system". I have four daughters 21 thru 10 and it never ceases to amaze me what they are not learning.
I was involved in research in one of my former careers and I trust statistics as far as I can throw them. Our statisticians would come and ask "what do you want it to show?". Then they would choose the analysis, sample, and presentation of the "results".

Why yes, it's just like throwing rocks at blind people!.. How intuitive of you!... I'm really trying to stop but everytime I see one of those blind people I have this urge to throw rocks, it's a real bummer when it's in a city and I can't find any rocks nearby so I try and carry at least one spare rock with me at all times. It makes me feel much better about myself afterwards

one thing i cant stand is when someone writes something and there is no puncuation or spell checking i mean how is someone supposed to decypher this mess the person is supposed to be relaying information so the individuals reading it can understand what the persion is trying to say but with a sentance that rambles on and on with no captalization punctuation paragraph breaks or anything that would make reading this easier they just type away not caring if anyone else can read it much less understand what that person is trying to say and this goes on and on and on as one complete sentance what is a persion supposed to do they cant read this and undersand anything it takes almost forever to figure it out and by then it feels like your head is about to explode so if i dont find a sentance break or paragraph brake or any punctuation i dont even bother reading it so there and this was a short one

You could also have a screw loose or lose your Marbles. :D

Lancer,
This issue was started for me when I was younger and was checking into a Motel in Ohio. The girl behind the desk had a tattoo on the top of her hand that read "Born too loose". I didn't know if she was complaining, advertising, making a pass, couldn't spell and or dropped out of school. I regret that I didn't say anything. Looking back, it was probably better that way. :)

Tic - gotta agree with you. I see many, many people misuse "loose" when they mean "lose". Drives me nuts. :D

They also use "losed" (or loosed) when "lost" is more appropriate...

I don't understand how those who think it cruel or a waste to comment on spelling and grammar can just live with the posts here on RCGroups. The constant deluge of improperly spelled or used words drives me nuts.
And the worst thing, I try to be coherent and I'm lucky to get a reply to one of my threads, whereas Joe Illiterate posts a bunch of nonsense and has the entire RCG membership commenting (and sometimes helpfully!). Grrr.

Question, is it flyer or flier, cause spell checker doesn't recognize flyer? Even though I have seen it spelled that way many times.
Actually they are both correct.
However, one definition of 'flyer' is not what you'd expect: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=flyer
But you'll have to be a Southerner to pronounce it... :D

I suck at spelling, and English in general, but I do use spell checker and try to pass as being slightly coherent in my post, but some don't seem to care at all. And I'm sorry to say it does effect my thoughts toward there - their? post. See, I suck at english.

Their = ownership
There = location

Someone mentioned dyslexic, which makes me think of one of my favoritist jokes...(please, don't.......) ;)
What does an agnostic dyslexic suffering insomnia do at night ?
lyes a wake at knight wondering if they're is a god !! (not such a great punch line..no puctuation, no spell check ....)
Lies awake at night wondering if there is a dog !! (punch line corrected !)
The first punch line, you might get the joke but think me a buffoon, the second punch line would make you realize what a great wit I am !! :D

RC Groups may not be the place to say it, but ....
English is important. It has no bearing on your morals or even your wisdom.
But poor english makes you sound ignorant. You may be well educated in other ways. You may be wise in dealing with all of lifes' problems. But poor English will "brand" you as an ignorant person. It will have an affect on your success in life. I believe this is one of the cold, hard facts of life.

Interesting and accurate appraisal of speaking English, which is the international language of business. Now, go and try to sell your idea to the school districts in Compton, California (if I recall correctly, possibly Oakland) where Ebonics is now considered an established language, to be recognized as such and taught as such. Be prepared to be labeled a full fledge racist, afterwhich your employer (if you are working) will be contacted and your dismissal will be demanded.
