My favoritest covering iron, the Coverite/21st Century model with the thermostat dial in the handle, is ancient and about to bite the dust. Used to be it was considered the best covering iron. What is the concensus for the best of today's covering irons?

bill to me the temp is everything, not how it gets hot....i would invest in a temp gauge, and then you can monitor the temp exactly were ya want it. peace, randy.

...is good in that the thermostat is really stable at any given setting. Measured with a thermometer, Hobbico or cheap irons veer around the average setting 30-50degrees in my recollection. On the negative side the Coverite iron's dial in the handle did not agree well with the Coverite spiral thermometer I acquired; there was a 30degrees or so mismatch. I calibrated my Coverite thermometer, in turn, against the house furnace thermometer and by dunking it in boiling water to get a nice spread of values.

That is why I prefer the Coverite iron, the electronic thermostat acts quicker and is more stable than the older mechanical thermostat. I've looked around a bit and it seems that there is still nothing better than the Coverite iron...

On order from my LHS.

And yes, the new digital IR thermeters asre great to calibrate the iron.
