Isn't there a material that is initially pliable like plasticine or chewing gum, but if struck a blow, such as with a hammer, instantly sets hard.
I've got a vague recollection of something like that that a science teacher back at school amazed us with many years ago.

I know of something that's pliable and can instantly get hard, but NOT with a hammer. ;) :p

there is...the cornstarch suspension used in the video above is such a "material."
The holes persist only when the shaking frequency is high enough (the equivalent of
your hammer blow) which then results in a sharp increase of the viscosity of the
suspension (shear thickening).

I watched a program on one of the public television channels, and they were taking bets as to the possibility of walking on pudding(possibly trying to debunk the walking on water story in the bible???) IIRC. The host stepped into a trough of pudding and sank to his ankles, then added some(lots??) of cornstarch to the pudding.
If the host ran quickly across it, he wouldn't sink. If he slowly walked across it, he would. They also showed him punching the mixture and it would solidify if punched vigorously. Pretty interesting stuff, along the same lines as the vibrating goo.
