Task Force-96 is having an extra run to follow the IPMS Nationals so that modelers who share our love for R/C Warships can come out and join us for some running..
This should be a great run. There will be several fellow guest modelers in from out of town, Kent Strapko and Tom Spettel from the Denver Area as well as Darren Scannel from Canada. Several more modelers are also expected but I can't think of their names at the moment.
The planned start time will be about 9:30 AM. 'till we get tired.
This run is open to all Warships and Commercial ships in scales ranging from 1:192 (1/16"=1') to 1:48 (1/4"=1') We prefer that you leave the 'Tupperware' RTR's behind. The BB firing combat ships are welcome but your firing systems must be deactivated at this park.
This should make for a great turnout.
Bring plenty of batteries and lots of stamina, this should be a long day with lots of running time.
Directions to Huntington Central Park, Huntington Beach CA:
405 Freeway
North Bound:
Exit Westminster Ave and take the East bound ramp, turn right at Westminster ("In and Out Burger" ) and then right again at Edwards Ave. Take Edwards about 4 miles to Inlet Ave. then turn left.
South Bound:
Exit Westminster/Springdale, Take the Westminster portion, this will make a tight right circle so slow down, take Westminster to Edwards and turn Right. Take Edwards about 4 miles to Inlet Ave. then turn left.
The Lake is on your right hand side, it is right next to the road so you can't miss it.
Can we get some messages from the Captains who are coming out.

We have a term here for the boats that people run that are a simple go out and buy it slap some batteries in and away you go, So we call them tupperware boats.
Task Force 96 was originally formed 23 years ago because we were regularly getting run into by these kind of boats, and the owners did not seem to care. Mostly we wanted to have constant scale fleet runs

Even if the boat is Navy (not a warship) but out of your scale range, would it be possible to attend?. :o

Hopefully it would be welcomed, Toes! - it could come in handy! :)
Sounds like a neat event!

While I appreciate the damage and frustration your wonderful models probably suffered at the hands of newbies, I'm not sure I would keep away RTR scale ships and there are many.
First, the assumption that the person can't pilot the boat could be wrong. They may have played with it enough to run circles around the finest built scale warship. There is no real link between choice of hulll and quality of pilot IMHO.
Second, RC boating is so niche in comparison to planes, trains and automobiles, that ANY new blood should be welcomed with open arms to the hobby.
Lastly, it would be possible to separate your event times to let certain kinds of boats operate with each other. With posted safety rules and enforcement of them, even bad pilots with great models would have to conform.
You could have run offs in piloting for fleet manuevers. Pilots who win some competition get to get their models together at the end and perform fleet maneuvers for some good video and snap shots. Who knows, you might even have a tupperware boat in there if it were allowed.
There have been some cool conversion threads of some of these tupperware models to very scale looking ships that have top flight RC gear in them, and probably a good pilot on the controls if we don't assume anything about the model to pilot link.
So, if it were me, I'd make a basic skill course. If a pilot can pass it with their model, I don't see the harm in letting them in on the fun... tupperware, rubbermaid, or sterilite... :D

These are some very good ideas here Shaun.
I think it is great that you volunteered with these ideas and your services.
Can I expect that you are going to show up at lets say no later then 7 AM to get this all set up and administer these test and training?

The water level is still high but it looks like it went down about 6" in the last month.
We did not see weeds when we went out last thursday evening.
We are working at having runs for Destroyer size ships on some evenings during the week, until it starts getting dark too early.

I'll make plans to be on the water with a cold beer in my hand, but it will have to be on the other side of the pond. :p

Chuck:
You mean that your not going to jump on a China Air 747 with your model and come play for the weekend????
Its only, what....about 30 hours of flying round trip :-)

Lee,
You mean "Air Boohow!"? Man, how I hate flying that airline where the flight attendents throw box lunches at you & then disappear for the remainder of the flight. And you don't ever want to get seated anywhere near the toilets. I have no idea how they got the certification to install outhouses on a 747, but that's exactly what one smells when you have the privilege of sitting anywhere near the head on an Air China flight! Makes me long for Delta & Northwurst!
I'd love to make it for your run & meet up with all you folks, but I'm saving my fen to try to make a trip downunder to attend T72's Annual Regatta this coming November. You guys have fun & look for me waving at you from the other side of the pond! :D

...for a moment I thought that minesweepers were going to be barred. The Tupper-ware Fleet is the endearing name given to the non-magnetic plastic hulled vessels of the Royal Navy. Sounds like it will be a great event. From the other side of the other pond good luck and we await pics galore. Hiring Aeroflot "big lift" is out of the question to bring my 1/24th Invincible RO5, sorry.

You get to go to the TF-72 Regatta, gee, that is where I want to go.
What they have achieved in 10 years is just incredible, I wish we could have something remotly like that group here in the states, but for several reasons....it will never happen.

Lee,
I'm an associate member of T72 & find the club - if only through long distance correspondence - to be a great group of dedicated model boaters.
John Slater just sent out his first issue of T72 Magazine & IMHO it rivals the best commerical publication available to this hobby.
Just like their ships, everything put out by these gents is first class!

Hey Chuck
I see that China air lost a 737 in Japan the other day, I think someone was smoking in one of the outhouses.
Thankfully no one was killed or seriously injured.

Lee,
That was China Airlines, Taiwan's flag carrier, who lost the 737 due to a fuel leak. Aside from a poor safety record due to pilots who have a tendency to pancake their planes during approach, they are a very nice airline to fly. Those folks on board that flight must be counting their lucky stars as it would have been a tragic scene if that engine erupted a few minutes earlier.
Air China is the PRC's flag carrier & the one with the flying outhouses. If it had been an Air China flight, I would have guessed the fire was due to a buildup in methane as shown here.

Thanks for the offer to let me assist, sadly, I will be unable to make it down to So-Cal that day. I used to live near Huntington Beach too.
The ideas provided are free of charge and if you like them it would probably be easy to incorporate them into a future event...
I work in an industry (computers) where we always stand accused of making things hard and isolating knowledge to a few individuals. So, I always try to make a habit of coming up with suggestions to include more people rather than exclude less knowledgable persons.
I'm well aware of the problems you are facing and fully understand the point of the rule. I'm not saying my ideas are good or even feasible for your current gathering, but perhaps by giving them, your group might think up even better ones and have an even better event for the ideas.
I really wish I could be there. Scale ships can be so incredibly well detailed that seeing them out on the water would remind one of when the real ships actually ruled the waves. If I was able to be there, I would be happy to help out in any fashion the organizers would need. Good luck with your event. ;)

Shaun:
The problem is, who is going to administer this as well as set it up and run it, I am not interested, I go out and run my ships with other ships of the same scale for enjoyment, If I want to work, I can stay home in my shop and do the stuff that I get paid for.
Task Force-96 is still a constant scale group, and that is what we will remain, there are several other clubs or groups that run models around here every month that run anything and everything in electric model boats.
