I dunno if this was asked before, but
whenever I click the FMS startup icon now, it waits a while, then says it has encountered an error and needs to shut down. Ive uninstalled it and reinstalled it a couple of times, with no results.
BTW: Im running Windows XP Home
what could possibly be wrong?

What version of FMS and exactly what error does it report ? Has it ever worked on that PC ?

yes, it has worked before, but now it just doesnt seem to want to run now. it just pulls up and says that "FMS has encountered an error and needs to shut down"
In the text file it says version 2.0 Alpha 8.5
there is a lot of technical information in there. I tried to find somthing in all that information to see if it tells the exact problem, but Ive never worked with that stuff, so it just looked like jibbberish.

That sort of error is usually a bad .dll and it usually tells you which one it is. It's possible that a program you loaded recently has stuck in its own version of a system .dll that FMS now doesn't like. Have a look in the error file and see if you can find any references to ".dll". The bit immediately before that is the dll name e.g. mycode.dll

It picked out kernel32.dll
I can probably find the file in my computer, but what do I do when i find it? delete it?

I've had this prob once or twice over the years, for me it usually happened after installing new applications or new fms planes that have a built in glitch. If its planes then its easy to delete them in windows explorer. If its other software, you might need to delete FMS and reinstall?

My advice is to make sure your video drivers are up to date. When the error occurs, there should be a link towards the end of the text telling you to click it for more details. On the upper right, it should have a file name that it's bombing out on.

I too was having a very similar problem. I at one point had disabled all comm ports within the bios, trying to fix other problems, and effectively ended up removing the "Ports (COM & LPT) device" from the device manager. Once I re-enabled a serial port in the bios, and reinstalled the device under windows (and rebooted I think) everything started working once again.
Hope this helps, but as always, your mileage may vary. I am however psyched to have this working once again!
