I know somebody in the UK has been waiting over 6 months for one from Andy's in Germany ..... so they might be good IF you can get one :(

Oberflugmodelbau might be a better alternative, in terms of both quality and availability. I am sure Ober winch has much higher resale value.

Sometimes Ober has had a special offer on 200mm EW4. Wider 250mm drum is a benefit in F3B, but 200mm is ok in quick F3J launches with 150 meters to turnaround. And next year F3J will (propably?) move to a shorter line (100 meters to turnaround?).

I would agree having used one of these winches this week ....the delivery on it was 8 weeks but this was a little long due to the F3B WC being on.

Delivery time for 250mm in Jan 2008 if you order now.

That's not a bad looking winch, specs are good, the design is like the current F3B versions. Graupner's price is good as well.

Ober: Jan/Feb and a bit over 1100.00E. Super nice, worth the price.

I am looking at building some in the USA that may be a little less $$ purely because of the low USD high Euro.

F3X ~ Too late for me. Ober order is booked. Well worth the wait.

I wonder how Graupner can produce and earn money for that price, or are the others (fluhs, ober) framing us?

The ober winches are excellent, seem to be the most popular for f3j in the UK.

I have used the cheaper of the two graupner winches, it was absolutely awful (no solenoid, the full current goes through the foot pedal, so lots of sparks under you feet!)

WHAT is it really so??!! 500A under the foot, great resistance the wires and pedal for the currents, does it get hot??

A club near me had spend a lot of money on 3x of the cheaper of the graupner winches (https://shop.graupner.de/webuerp/servlet/AI?ARTN=807)

The foot pedal is actually mounted right next to the winch drum, on the chassis of the winch whcih seems quite dangerous! The winch stalled before I was even close to letting go of the model and worse of all the clutch had started slipping on all 3 winches by the end of the first day of use.

The more expensive graupner winch might be better quality, but knowing how much more Graupner badged gear normally costs - compared to unbadged equivlents, I would not risk it.

If these winches were any good you would see a lot more of them about, considering the price.

(dont forget you have to buy the turnaround separately)

As far as I am aware, this style of #804 winch became viewable on the Graupner Website in February 2007. If you look at the .pdf file for the manual to the winch, it still shows the pictures of the old style #804. I believe that the first production run of this "new" style #804 has only just been delivered to a selection of retailers, so this is why not many have been seen yet. I hope mine arrives soon and I can let you all know how it performs.

Yes I am interested as well. This is a different winch than the compact all-in- one that some have complaints about, this one has the 250mm drum and Bosch motor, solenoid so there is a good chance that its OK or better.

Anybody used the Graupner #804 yet?
I'm looking for a winch and I have found this Graupner #804 for less than €500 on some German webshops...

It might not be a +€1000.- Oberflug competition winch, but do you think it performs OK for launching F3J planes for sport flying?

We have three of them in our country. And had three failures - electronic speed controller failed on all winches. Mine was left for few hours in rain, another two - causes not clear. I replaced all mosfets, colleague replaced controller with simple starter solenoid, third winch still awaits repair.
Mechanical part seems more or less ok (will see after few years).

Thanks for the information... I have tried to search the web and all RC-forums I know and there's very little to none discussion concerning the winch.

At sub 500.- and the looks of a 'real' F3B winch it sure looks tempting, but if it's bad quality it's not worth it.
Im surprised though that it's not more feedback on it since there has to be a few lucky, or unlucky owners out there. (This is the only off the shelf commercial winch I think)
