Hi all,
look at http://rcpilot.eu . They offer new concept for charging battery pack of A123 cells. The battery is divided into subpacks during charge to save energy from power source. One charger can support up to 4 subpacks. After charging the subpacks, they can be connected in varios combinations to provide different voltage and capacity.

Charge and balance process for battery 12S2P takes only 10-15 minutes  at 10A charge current per subpack.

Also they provide kits for battery assembly compatible to their chargers.

I think this idea is great!

Here are some pictures of models with this power system:

What's so special about parallel charging?

Maybe they charge the cells at 10a, but if 2-3 packs are paralleled, that's 20-30a.

There is negligible energy savings. The only savings is not having to boost the voltage. Not sure of the efficiency of Dc to DC boosters, but probably very high.

To charge 12S A123 pack you need 44V.Typical effectiveness of voltage boosters is 80-90%. That means 50-100W power loss!! (10-20% from 440W)
If you need to charge more than one pack the power loss came hugeness.

This charger can charge 4 subpacks simultaneously and consume 40A from 12V.

Parallel charging may be worth :)
