View Full Version : Discussion Airfoil, aileron placement for scaled-up monsun?

Hi Everyone,

I am considering a project to scale up a Graupner Monsun. I really like the
way this plane looks but it is a bit hot for my flying skills. Also the
idea of designing and building a custom model from scratch appeals
to me.

Here are some pictures of a Monsun I found on the web:

http://www.koralpe.biz/monsun209.html

My goals are to get a low stall speed so I can fly slowly but still have
the ability to fly moderately fast if I want. I would also like to glide
reasonably well. Flying slowly is the primary goal.

The ARF Monsun that I own currently has strip ailerons. I would like
to replace those with narrower and deeper ailerons on the outside of the
wing and flaps near the root.

I intend to double the size of the plane, giving a final wingspan of 72 inches.

Would anyone like to suggest an appropriate airfoil to get the
characteristics that I am looking for?

Any other comments are also welcome.

Thanks,

Lee

If you are not too concerned about inverted performance then the good old Clark-Y takes some beating... Easy to build too if you are doing a built up wing.

Thanks, I am not really concerned about inverted performance, so that sounds good.

I guess the question I should really be asking though is a bit more basic:

If I double the size of everything on this plane will it still fly? :)

Thanks again,

Lee

Yes, it should fly fine :) .

Heh, the real problem with scale planes is taking the full size, scaling it down 5 times and still getting it to fly properly. .Scaling UP should just be a matter of putting a big enough engine on it

Thanks for the info.

I'm collecting pictures of the full size plane off the web, so I can make it a bit more realistic looking.
