Hi Guys,

How about this:
2 days of Nothin' but DISTANCE!

F3B Distance for 2 days. Using the same working time and launch methods.

Run what you brung! Think about it: F3B models are competitive but so are F3J models. You don't need to worry about the speed task so many of the models currently owned will do just fine. There may even be a advantage to running a F3J bird.

I am thinking about Fresno for the site unless you have a better place. What do you think? Are you in?

tewatson
Jul 21, 2007, 09:54 PM
I would be in for one day. Run it as two separate contests and add an aggregate award for those who fly both days.

I'm already going to be in enough trouble when I try to get our annual kids Halloween party moved back a week so's I can do the Poway F3B event in October. Between that and my Visalia four-day disappearing act, well...

I would be up for a nothing but distance contest. 7 minute working time 4 minutes on course, and as many relaunches as you have winches for... That would be great practice. Let me know when and where.

Fresno is a bit closer for the So Cal guys, and me too, but I think Sac would be a better distance site.

I have a few emails asking when this will happen. Guys at this point I am looking for interest, we need 20 pilots to make this fun and get a good mix of heats.

I doubt that we will have this by Oct 8 as I don't have enough pilots committed at this time, I know once a date is set then guys will know when and plan around it.

Lets keep the discussion going and most of you will be at the F3B event in October. That should peak interest a bunch!

Tom, you don't need 20 pilots to make this fun. If you can get 8 and some helpers, you've got one helluva contest.

And guys - you don't need a state of the art F3B model to fly distance. It's probably easier with a good TD model in most air. I once went 27 laps at a Nats F3B contest with a Psyko.

It's hard to explain how much of a better pilot flying some distance laps on a course will make you. Come on guys - try something new!!!!

I agree.
my personal best of 29 laps was with a Tragi 701.

whats so fun & challenging about distance is there are so many variables and
decisions to make, before you launch and ever lap there after.

So lets update the question:

1. Do you want to try for a 2 day event in Fresno (or somewhere abouts) and try and bring some of the NoCal pilots to a central site.

or.

2. Have one in SoCal. A 1 day event with about 10 pilots or as many as we get?

We also need guys with F3B winches!!! We will also share winches and have a entry fee that will cover the cost of mono.

Dates: It looks like November at earliest. Visalia is in Oct. The So Cal F3B is in late October. Unless you guys want to do this later this month. I can't make it but that shouldn't stop you especially for a 1 day SoCal event.

I personally would like to see this as a 2-day event and get 20+ guys coming...maybe it can grow into that.

If you want 2 days in Fresno we need to rally the NoCal guys, I am sure DZ, Mehrdad and Speroni would come. They have winches. Tim Cone said he will throw down a BBQ and pool party!

If you want to go forward lets hear it. When in November is good? Before Thanksgiving I am sure. 2 weeks before?

If its the 10th/11th I will be able to come over to Fresno. Would it be held at the club site at LL Park? Also, for those that arent really familiar/no experience w/F3B, whats a good site to read about F3B, in particular the distance task? I will be bringing my Perfect(which BTW Im just finishing up build out on today) and Victor. Can you change planes as Id like to try both of them?

OK, I spoke with Tim and let him know the BBQ is at his place :D (its good to have friends)

He will contact the Fresno club and get the permission to use the field November 10-11 and see if anyone can volunteer to help push buttons.

We will start a sign up here I need to know:

How many winches:
Has line? How much?
Will bring a helper:
Freq 1.
Freq 2.
Model name:

Lets see what equipment we can get and we will need to share the winches to make this happen. I would say the entry fee should cover the line for the weekend. So if you have line worth using let us know here. I need to ask Tim what the field condition is and how hard on line it will be. If you didn't know 1 winch drum of line is about $20.00 and we can't retie the line breaks!

DZ, can we use your F3B system and have Mikes as a back up?
We need a generator at the field for charging. Anyone have one?
Shades. (I can bring 1 10x10 EZ up) A few more would be nice.
Lets put this together!!!

I flew the Fresno field two weeks ago. It is clay dirt that is level, with wide open spaces. That may prematurely wear the line. Just FYI. Also I would check with Tim Cone as to the Fog. I moved from Fresno quite a while ago but still remember the fog. It shouldn't be a problem in November but Tim might want to check just in case.

I dont have a plane but I could make the two days as a helper. So count me in.

Come on T.E.W., she has got to understand your hobby at some point.
There is no logic involved, little compassion for anything outside the family and no tolerance for any conflicts with unilaterally established obligations (such as the annual Halloween party that will force me to miss the October F3B event).

In this case, a just-established family obligation on Nov. 11 will probably force me to miss the Distance event as well.

This is why I've only been spotted at the big two-day events for the past few years, and scant few local contests...gotta pick my lost points carefully.

WOW... Tom... THAT right there is why the US struggles with F3B or F3J....
Lack of Commitment!!
I bet Tiger Woods doesn't miss the US Open because of his sisters best friends uncles ex-wife is have a cat shaving party!!!
Come on people... if you do this for leisure... Fine... But if you wanna be serious about it... you gotta BE SERIOUS!!!

Do they allow overnight camping at the Fresno Field?
Do they allow Large (2 meter @ 11 pounds/2.4Kw) electric
models to fly at their site???

Is there a map to the Fresno Field?
Could Visalia be an alternative location?

glderguy
Sep 06, 2007, 10:36 AM
If they dont allow camping at the field for this event you can camp at Millerton Lake. It is close, real close. If you look east from the field, there is the dam forming Millerton in plain, almost reach out and touch, sight. There will probably be only one campground open during the winter there so it may be best to reserve a spot if a person wants to camp there. They have bald eagles nesting there in the winter as well, one may get lucky and see them out diving on surface fish in the lake! If you want to eat close by there is a casino up the road a very short distance from the field/Millerton lake called Table Mountain Casino. They have a not the best but not too bad buffet and steakhouse.

Nor will I jeopardize my job for such nonsense, either. But, with two young kids I can't always put flying as first priority. I'm simply lamenting the fact that the few F3B events that come up in the west lately seem to land on dates that I can't make.

Yep I know. Its a bear to get guys together. A commitment is required to get something started but lets just do it and report back on all the fun they missed! Plus schedule more events next year. There will be more dates!!

Guys, DJ Klein and I were doing some brainstorming last night, and here are a couple of interesting ideas to try and incorporate into our Distance only event.

1. Come one come all - Even though this is being called a competition there is no reason for anyone to decide not to come and fly because of lack of experience....(G.L.)

2. To emphasize that point and to make the competition part even more fun and less intimidating, why not pit those with similar skills/experience together in the heats. That way one would not be stepping up against an experienced F3B'er and muttering the futility of even launching in that group. Another cool twist could be that when we organize on the first morning, everyone could drop a slip of paper into a hat that has their own name at the top, and the name of one or two people that they feel can be competitive against, and want to make as their mark to beat.

3. We would make sure that they fly against those marked guys as many times as possible. We could reassess the idea on day two, or the second half of day one for that matter, and decide to continue 'cuz everyone is having so much fun, or try another tactic 'cuz everyone is so bored..???

4. The advanced guys will help strategize, call for, and generally help the less experienced pilots. Of course, with the goal of beating the guy and his helper/caller on their list....I think this will be darn fun actually...:-)

I think the above ideas will add a sporting sense of competition across the board, and not intimidate those that might not want to come out and fly otherwise. It sort of looks like a seeded man-on-man distance event...kinda.

Enthusiastically submitted,

Mike Smith

Sounds great guys! Talk it up.
Remember you don't need a F3B model, many of the faster F3J ships do great in distance maybe even better than the typical F3B with the larger span and aspect ratio. You NYX, Pike Superior, Zenith, Frazer and all Tragi pilots need to come on out. Also you F3F guys with hooks, ARIS, F3F NYX, Vikings etc come on out! You are about at the right weight dry for distance!

Mike S - good idea. That concept is exactly like the seeded MoM TD contests flown EVERYWHERE but So Cal. I think we have a good idea how to seed the first round or two of flight groups, then you let the scores dictate the flight group guys fly in.

Hey DP, I know about the seeded stuff, but for this event, the winners of the various heats will not necessarily be facing off the winners of the other heats unless they want to move up into a different level group. So, I am thinking that it is more of a touchy feely round by round self seeded man on man or TFRBRSSMOM for those that like to abbreviate :D

Not sure if it's for public knowledge (I guess it is now - :p ) I hope to test one in my newest model next week.

In my UAV flight experiance, 900MHz has been better in a carbon environment (compared to 2.4GHz)

It is just better from an antenna standpoint.
Also.. for a fixed power output, lower freq = more range.

Tell Jim and Scott Mike says Hi!!! lol

If your coming add your name to the list please. We are ON for the event!!
The Oct F3B is postponed so go out and practice a little distance even with your AMA winch. You TD guys get some ballast in those F3J ships and do a few laps. It looks like we will put F3J vs. F3J and F3B with F3B models for the most part. Now you have NO reason not to attend!!!!

See you.

Sherpa-
I know we will need helpers to sit on the sites and push buttons for the turns. Tom is overseas but I am sure he will check in to comment.

Sherpa,

Thanks for coming out to help us. Your list looks good, would also consider adding: sun glasses, sunscreen and lip sun block, hat/cap, water, snacks, and possibly camera.

Maybe you remember me heading to SouthWest Classic last February? It will be good meeting you again, this time under slightly different circumstances ;)

Regards,

Mehrdad
