Here is a Modeltech ARF P-47 that I have done some detailing too. I painted the cowl, did a radial engine, added the nose art, and detailed the fuse and wings with panel line tape and so far have shaded the panel lines on the wing.

Those are two beautiful planes Tom. Could you briefly explain your method of making rivets? I've seen and used a few different methods and really haven't been happy with any of them.

J

TomCrump
Aug 28, 2007, 12:35 PM
J

The rivets on the 190 are made from thinned canopy glue and a hypodermic needle. The glue was thinned with water.

On the Stuka, I used Tite Bond III and a syringe. here's a mini tutorial on my method.http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=615484&page=16

Here's one of mine that I'm really happy with. Alfa Mig 15, stock setup but airbrushed in Russian airforce display team colours of the 1950's. Every thing you see on the model was airbrushed on. It took a lot of time and masking tape, but I'm happy with it. The panel lines are simply the red paint scratched off with a blade to reveal the factory silver paint under it.

It fly's well too.

Here is my recent build on a Fokker Dr-1 Triplane. IT is standoff scale with a 3D twist added. I wanted the option to sport fly it if I wanted too. This plane was built with builders pink foam. It was painted with blue and white. Lt August Von Rabin's colors. (White Raven) Jasta 7. The wing each have added airlerons for quicker roll rates.

Where did you get the Vickers guns on the Fokker?

degreen60
Feb 29, 2008, 06:03 PM
The Sopwith tripe is a scratch build using GWS Tiger Moth wings. The Albatros is a Kavan ARF that got beat up in several crashes and needed a rebuild. The lozenge pattern is printed on paper and glued on the wings. The dragon is also printed on paper and glued on. Sence I took these pictures I have made differant guns for my planes. Here are pictures of the new guns.

Hi Vincent,
You may get a chuckle out of this. I go back to early 50's when I first started building models. We had very little supplies back then like today. Those are hair curlers from that era. Perferated aluminum. Almost impossible to find today. I added wood blocks for parts of the guns. I bellmouthed the barrel from plastic tube. Common pin sight bent into a round simulated sight. I guess you may say I can make something out of nothing. At least that what my wife says. Try Williams Brothers online. The company is supposed to be back on track. They make lots of scale stuff that may work.
Degreen60
Good work! They look nice and they are nice creations you have there. You and I are similar. "Make something out of nothing". Keep up the good work.
Happy Flying All.

Degreen,
That motor is a very novel idea for a small model. The picture really looks good. What materials are used to make the motor? That plane is so neat. All the wires give it such a nice look. I think that must look good on those slow flybys. I hope you took some close by videos. It must be a joy to see it flying.
Thanks for sharing,

I found a free paper printed model of a LeRhone engine on the net. I enlarged the motor to size I wanted. Wrapped the printed cylinders arround foam rods and glued to the bell of a brushless motor. I plan on adding more printed parts soon.

The wires are not attached to the wing but are for show only. They run through plastic tubes I installed in the wing. The front wire is all one wire and the back wire is all one wire. They are hooked on with springs under the fuselage. I only have one flight on the plane. Weather hasn't been good enough to fly this plane.

Here is my latest scratchbuilt plane. A Focke Wulf Fw-190-D9. It was built using Hans Joachims depron plans in the scratchbuilt forum. I was also following John Morgans conversion with a home made plug for the epoxy fuselage. The wing is hot wired pink foam with 0.75 oz glass cloth and water base polyuretane . The motor is an equivelent to a 45-50cc gas motor. It runs on a Rhino 4s 14.8v 4000Ah lipo pak. It weighs 7 pounds ready to fly. Wingspan is 60 inches.

You used polyurethane instead of resin when you laid the cloth on?

Thanks, Bob. I frequently refer to the plastic models for docs, too.

**neons**
Apr 12, 2009, 11:02 AM
Xanadu,
I chose to cover my FW190-D9 wing with 0.75 oz fibre glass cloth. I then gave it 2 coats of waterbase polyurethane floor paint for a good sub base to paint over. After the plane was sprayed with WallyWorld arts paint grey for a primer and filling. I later painted 2 colors of a green and raw umber brown for camoflage after all the building was done. . My final light coat was the semi-gloss oil polyurethane to seal all the decals and shading. This helps out the wear and smudging it gets in handling and hanger rash.

I do not know if it is lighter than if I epoxied the wing to begin with. Epoxy would be stronger and easier to finish with it's solid surface. Even then it would still have to be painted and maybe get heavier too.. I chose to use Polyurethane thinking that maybe I saved a few ounces giving up the surface strength. My wings strength lies in the carbon fiber arrowshaft spars. That is my style of build. We all have our own developed style of building and finishing. I look at it as a sort of personal hand written signature.

My Stuka, posted on the previous page, was also glassed WBP, innstead of resin.

I like the low odor, fast cure time, and cost savings.

After it fully dries, automotive primers can be sprayed over it, with no ill effects.

Apr 12, 2009, 03:57 PM
Tom if anyone should know you should. That is on heck of a paint job on that Stuka. I like the WBPU to work with as I can build up layers in light coats. I use a hobby blow dry to speed up drying also as the humidity and temp is low in my garage. It allows a lot of painting to get done. Of course you beautiful Space Walker is another story.
