laying-out a course

Hi All,

What's the best way of laying out a winch lane for F3B in terms of getting it square? Assuming a winch line to turnaround of 200m and catering for a variable number of winches from 5 to 50.

I've used a prism gadget (hand-held) with varying levels of success.

Is there a way to exploit the 3/4/5 nature of a right-angled triangle to do it?

Use a simple tramping compass. Set your winch line as req'd, take a bearing and adjust for a 90 degree bearing, we use a measuring wheel to step off the 200m, sight back on your original bearing to set the turnaround line and you're done.
