here is something strange, last night i turned on the dx7 and the lcd screen was showing 10.1volts,how is that possible when the bat is only 9.6volts?
The battery in the DX-7 is an 8 cell NiMH battery. The NOMINAL voltage is 1.2 volts per cell which totals 9.6 volts. However, the fully charged voltage (under load) is 1.35 to 1.4 volts per cell. So, when it's fully charged you will see 11.2 volts or higher. It's the same deal as with your lipos. A three cell lipo has a nominal voltage of 11.1 volts (3.7 volts per cell) but it's charged voltage is 12.6 volts (4.2 volts per cell).
Sting
A nominal quantity (e.g., length, diameter, speed, volume, voltage, value) is generally the ideal quantity according to which some item has been named. Such a nominal value may often be different from the actual value, having a relation to the actual value that is anywhere on a spectrum from closely related (for example, differing only within a range of acceptable random variation) to only distantly related. An example of the former is a type of battery that has an actual voltage of 1.62 V, but is called a "1.5 volt battery"; it has a nominal voltage of 1.5 V (which cannot be measured anywhere). An example of the latter is the nominal size 2×4 for dimensional lumber: its actual size is 1½″ × 3½″ (38×89 mm) (plus or minus some small tolerance).

Chaps..I'm thinking on swapping out the std motor in the ES600 with a Hacker A50 motor. Does anyone know what's the modulus of the ES600 main gear? It's a 780kV motor, & going by the head speed calc for 2200rpm running on 6S, I'll be needing a 17tooth pinion. Any suggestion on where I can get one? The A50 comes with a 5mm shaft.

Frank,
I thought that it was said that it was a .7 mod pinion but search through the thread here to back that up. As Doug Adams said, my memory is comparable to a Queen Alexandra Birdwing Butterfly, "in that it was colorful, flitted prettily hither and thither, and was now, alas, almost completely extinct." :p

All this talk of larger motors.
I think the stock motor is plenty powerful enough to get me in trouble.
Maybe after I learn how to actually fly this monster I will consider a larger motor.
Speaking of which, the wind is still blowing here. Maybe I should try to fly at midnight. It does seem very quiet then. I guess I will need lots of lights and better vision then I have now...............

I run 2 x 6S 4600mAh lipos. I get about 12mins sports flying. yeah, she's very graceful in flight, though a wee bit frumpy. Kinda like watching a 747 jumbo fly as compared to a 737. You get almost a full 1.5s reaction time if you make a wrong move in the air.

You would need a smaller pinion. The main gear is 120T and yes the headspeed is way to high. I think the smallest pinion you can get that will fit a 5 mm shaft is 10T and you would need an 8T. 10T may work with 5 cells but you still would be pushing it.
My thinking was to go with the 1200kv motor the same as the stock one and save the weight. The 1400kv motor may be good on 5 cells as well.

Too low of a throttle curve can also do it. The motor is running outside it's efficiency range, and the ESC is having to switch more to keep it running low, both will build up more heat.
Like the others said, get a pitch gage, you need to know where it's running.

Not loose or tight, but firm, and make sure both have even tension.
I put my thumbs at the bolts with each forefinger about 3" from my thumbs and pull the blades towards me. I adjust the tension where they feel even and it takes a firm pull with my just the forefingers, but not straining.
If that makes any sense?

Yes 4 cells with the stock pinion. Awhile back Barock and Fpainter3 used 1900kv motors and 4 cells maybe they can update on how it is working out. In my opinion this would not be as good as what you have now because your options are very limited. I like the 1200kv motor because it will handle 5 or 6 cells on the stock pinion and if you wanted to try 4 cells you can get a bigger pinion. I am looking at the Scorpian motor because it is 100 grams lighter than the Esky.
This is the 1200kv motor. http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_25_65&products_id=311
I tighten my blades so that when the blades are extended I can stand the Heli on it's nose and gently shake it without the blades moving.

I have the blades pretty tight so they won't flop back when it jerks to life.
The tail blades are very loose as they open out from the spinning very fast.

Also remember if you drop the voltage, your amp draw will go up.
Here's a amp chart from my setup with gentle flying a few full collective punchouts (+10 degrees). Notice it runs on average around 27 amps and spikes at 50 amps.
So with a 6S pack, that's:
22.2V x 27A = 599.4 Watts Average
22.2V x 50A = 1110 Watts Peak
So if I switch to a 4S pack:
599.4W / 14.8V = 40.5 Amps Average
1110W / 14.8V = 74 Amps peak
Pretty big jump in amp draw

Hi HowNot2Fly..one thing I've learnt from this hobby is lots and lots of patience. just when all hope is lost after a crash, I've found satisfaction is the rebuilding and another lesson learnt of what NOT to do again. The best feeling is when you've accomplished a new move with your heli, and the zest for more.

Did you get this one?

Or this one?

The first one is longer (the one I used), increasing your tail rotor radius, and also has the nice thrust bearings and longer inner shafts on the hub.

After the Grrr comes the grin....I'm impressed! Nearly a week after I pranged it,my ES is flying again with a really good tail to boot! Tail's never held that well, but now with the Align hub and rotors I feel confident that I could quite happily pirouette and it'd stop when I say so....SWEET!!!! :D

I got the first one which, as you say, seems to have been made a tad longer,it says "new tail rotor holder" on the packet. My Smart's tail doesn't touch the deck when the battery pack's onboard but I modded the stock fin a smidge to give 6mm clearance just in case. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the fin and glued in a piece of music wire. I'm chuffed! :D

you might want to be careful about the music wire extension... have seen a video of someone that did something like that on his raptor 60...yet when he landed (it was an auto) it caused the tail to bounce upward...result was a boom strike.

Hmmm... I really don't think this little piece of wire is going to cause a boom strike somehow...Stuffing a heli into the deck with negative pitch on the blades and flaring a little too late will though... :D :p

you're probably right...his wire was a bit longer... then again, unless you're landing on a hard surface, doubt that will do much to help either.. as long as the tail stays out of the grass, you should be fine.. hope the Trex tail works as good for you as it has on the Hurricane 550

How many ppl are still flying the stock tail? My Align tail is all set to go... I'll try it out today if it doesn't rain. Then (assuming it comes down in one piece) I'll throw the DS8900G on the tail and see if it really makes a difference. :D

For those of you who are interested,I made a little video of what 3 seperated Lipo cells do when you slice the envelopes and immerse them in brine.....Looks kind of gross..... I dread to think what kind of fumes these things are giving off. I got arcs from the blade when I sliced 'em open....

3 cells from a puffed 1300 mah 11.1v pack. I seperated them, sliced the envelopes and then put them in a saucepan with salty water....Nearly 2 hours ago and the little suckers are still bubbling away...I'm scared to go to bed in case something crazy happens.....  :censored: We have smoke alarms though...

Andy Andy Andy I guess it's too late to tell you now but the fumes will kill off brain cells tres rapide! As little as 10 seconds will put you back to when you were in 4th or 5th grade.
Now you will probably go out and purchase toys and spend a large amount of your money on them!
Oh wait! I think we all must have breathed some of those fumes at one time as I see many toys on the wall and some on the workbench in my garage.
When will the wind cease? That is the question. I am getting where I will risk the Monster in the wind just to get some piloting time in.

GREAT! now when I have questions Andy's response will be "goo goo gaa gaa" so much for rocket science :D
John, I do risk it but I have cover by ducking below the fence line in my backyard, I would not risk her at the field. And at the field the wind is constantly swirling so you never know what to do......we need a better (FLAT) field.

HowNot2fly Get out of your garage! You need room to recover if, when, things go bad.
I have crashed many times in my garage, then many times in the driveway and then not so many times in the yard.
Then to a field and I then had more room to recover and it made a big difference.
I encourage you to go wherever you have more room. Oh yes, watch out for overhead lamps and wires. Don't ask how I know to look for those nasty things. :) :) :)

Hey Frank, what do you think of the Protos? I've had my eye on that one.
Hi Tweek..I think she's a real beaut, the build went very smoothly, with many similarities with other helis I have built so far. The design that really stood out was the way that the belt drive goes around the motor, main gear and the tail pulley with the auto-rotation gear on the pinion itself. This design makes her a very quiet heli to fly. As u can probably tell from the photos, she's also very attractive and sure to attract lots of passer-bys. Only 2 issues seems to stand out, one being the tail pulley (being sorted out now by Corrado from MSHeli) and the canopy being too brittle. Being a new release helicopter, and the first by MSHeli, I'm very impressed by the quality of the finished product. This is a definite must own heli, for helicopter afficionados.

Andy I have sat through many videos of choppers and airplanes flying and crashing but I think you have won the prize for the most boring video ever seen.
I congratulate you.
Now we will have to have a competition and see who can top your video.
Your video was chopper related so I cannot video my woodpile and enter it in the competition.  .....
Maybe Larry and I could get together and he could video me holding my Monster E600 and dozing in the sun. Maybe sipping a cold beverage?
I bet we could take first place in the most boring video if we put our combined minds to it.
The most amazing thing is that we all probably watched your video waiting for something to happen. Sorta like paint drying.
Hey there is another winning idea. Paint the canopy of my E600 nad then video it drying
Your next video better be your chopper or the jet flying or you will never live it down :) :) :) :) :)
