hi...
am trying to give DS a shot before I head to the slope, would like to be able to simulate. I've tried getting aloft in FSone, using Blancas crater and tracon, but no luck. absolutely no documentation about this from FSOne. Saw the "new" video of DS with these settings on the inertiasoft site, but that didnt help much.

anyone that can explain this to me somehow?

what is the best site to start ds with? are many ds'ing with fsone? is it realistic?

thanks.

I've attached a DS setup that works well for the Blanca Crater site in
FSOne. You'll need to pick the sailplane, wind, site, and hand launch
(per screen grab). Also, there's a picture of the orbit orientation
that works when flying. Then here's a video that shows it:

Someone mentioned before that it needed lots of turbulence, but to some
extent this depends on the site.

I've been trying that setup, but not using the "E" tracon version.

I cant get nearly as far out on the handlaunch as they show in the vid, always stalling and sinking on the way out, while trying to roll into the dive. of course I dont know what I 'm doing in DS anyway, so maybe I'm missing something. Tried using similar stick movements as shown on vid. Maybe I could use electric assist to get out there.

the vid shows turbulent winds so maybe I wil try that too.

any input appreciated. wonder if the ascent can DS?

I hope FSOne includes some real slope planes in the future.

The trick is to pick the heavy sailplanes. Light sailplanes w/ light wing loadings will not work. When you handlaunch, fly/climb out a bit and then dive downwind into the lower part of the orbit and then continue w/ the turn into pointing upwind and climbing at the same time. Then repeat ... All you need to do is fly the orbit (something like it) in the video and DS will work for you. It will become automatic.

The Ascent has such a low wing loading it will not DS a big site w/ big shear like in the crater. Airplanes with smaller wing loadings need more localized/strong shear because they don't have enough inertia (mass) to push through a tall shear like modeled in the crater site.

I agree about getting some slopers. There is a straight wing version of the Tracon and it's more like a sloper (just not a short stubbing wing).

what wind settings do you recommend for starting out... turbulent (variable)? what speed setting?

I just havent been able to get as far out as in the vid, so I get blown back towards me, against the side of the crater... I'm not clear why the wind is going that way... must be a ds thing. supposed to be coming from behind, no? Is it the eddy coming back up the crater that sends me crashing into the wall on the right??

I think I will try the electric version, so I can fish around and get a sense of the wind, not just crash in 5 seconds!

thanks for any further input!

OK, I think I see what's happening ... the general winds will not work for DS and 'yes' depending on which one you pick, you'll be blown north, south, east or west.

Note that the wind case in the screen grab above is titled "DS Winds: Blanca Crater" and it's the 20 mph wind. Based on what you've described above you have picked a general wind (steady or otherwise). Go down the wind list until you get to the "DS" group to get the dynamics soaring winds. These include the all important wind shear over the backward facing cliff. As you look out over the water/cliff, the wind will come from right to left once you pick the Blanca Crater DS wind setup.

It will help if you press 'w' to get the wind triangle that shows the wind direction. The triangle points in the direction of the wind relative to where you are looking.
