Here's to not judging anyone in this forum upon how many previous posts they've made to this or any other forum!

I don't see any specifics for this forum, but by the title it seems this will be (should be) used for non-aggressive, non-political, non-religious types of talk rather then discussion, which to me would suppose some degree of debate, which would also no doubt spawn the above "nons".

I would hope this satisfies the need for a peaceful place to "Chit Chat".

Thank goodness. Usually I wander into LTUP and see something about a soon-to-be-ex Pres that my blood gets a-bubblin. Now we can just chit-chat.

I'm fine. And you?

You got it. I made a little blog entry here (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=713156) about it.

Hi Usta, I'm fine, thanks for asking. Weather is pretty crappy though, heavy rain and visibility only a couple of hundred yards. Looks like it will be that way for at least two more days.

Hey jkettu,

Just a question and saying hello...

My family's (both sides) roots came over from Finland. I've had a couple of uncles/aunts who went back there and said they seen some interesting sites and even some industry with the family name on it. I did a google search a few times over the years and found even a village with the family name (all or part I don't recall), but thought that was kinda neat. Do you know of or have heard the name Marjama? Just thought I'd ask, since were all being nice here to each other ;):D.

Hi, Rodger! Nothing special comes to my mind right now, but that is pretty common name around here. Are you looking for some specific info and if yes, could you throw some more hints?

Hi, Rodger! Nothing special comes to my mind right now, but that is pretty common name around here. Are you looking for some specific info and if yes, could you throw some more hints? Not really, just curious because almost all Marjama's I have ever come in contact with always lead back to 1 of 2 brothers that came to Northen Minnesota back in mid 1800's (IIRC). I am a little surprised Marjama is a pretty common name there however.

Another interesting thing came from a search I did maybe 8-10 years ago or so. The search brought up a medal that was being awarded to some delegate in Estonia by the King of Estonia. It wouldn't have been all that interesting, but for the name of the award -- Something like "The Order of the Marjamaa Cross".

I sent a few emails out to some of my older relatives and family, and my younger brother got so excited he sent an email to the King of Estonia! asking about this medal. Only a week or 2 later he got an email back, apparaently from the King himself explaining the origins of our family name (as he understood it) and some more about the medal. Turned out it is the highest civilian award in Estonia.

Well, since then, I've had some interest in tracing my side of the family name back to it's roots. Not an overwhelming urge or anything, just a way to have some fun and do a little "exploring around" so to speak.

Interesting!
I'm half Finn myself. Around 1880-1890 my mother's father immigrated, and her mother was born here to immigrants. I know nothing about any relatives in the "old country".

Yeah, looking back to one heritage is fun for the most part. I've found alot of stuff over the years but I am a fairly disorganized type of person (keep most stuff in my head), and the few times I wanted to put together some of the lineages, the thought of all of that searching again kinds put me off.

Couple of my cousins did a family tree by asking some specific questions to all the family (those we knew about) and some photos. They did this about 20 years or so ago. It was a big effort and they printed up a large family tree chart with pics, dates, and so on. Even had a family crest on it, which I guess was fairly common back in the old country.

It only went back to those 2 brothers however, no further. Was interesting, but since it only went back for me 4 generations, it was somewhat limited in any real information I hadn't already heard from mom or grandma.

It's about 8-9 miles, However in my small town only 6 stoplights. Only one of those stoplights in between me and the flying field.....drive is short!!

Best wishes........Murph..........
