View Full Version : Question Question about Flap set-up

I am building up an Art Hobby Bore 2M and decided to add flaps, primarily for crow during landing. Although I have flown ships before with flaps/crow, it was an ARF and I did not have to set up the flaps and didn't really pay attention to how it was hinged, control horn placement etc.

My Questions:

1) Should I set up the flaps to be able to go to 90 degrees at max throw (for stopping power)?

2) Other idea was to bevel the top leading edge of the flaps for some upward movement to work in conjunction with the ailerons for some quick roll response. I would be hinging the flaps on the bottom surface (of course) and use gap tape to seal the exposed gap.

Comments, suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Jack,

90 degrees--for sure. The more braking you can get, the better.

I think it's very good to have some negative (up or reflex) flap. Adding a little up will allow the glider to travel much faster when you need to get out of sink or just get somewhere fast.

My opinion about mixing ailerons to flaps is not to do so. Many pilots do it and like it that way. My idea is that inboard wing sections are poor aileron extensions because they are not far enough out on the wing to be very effective in creating roll force. At the same time, using them as extra ailerons means that the airfoil in the flap section is rarely flying at the design point and is hence not being used at peak effeciency.
