Knife-edge

How do you do a "knife-edge"? Do you have to have an aerobatic plane to do it?:confused:

For proper knife-edge flying you need a model with sufficient fuselage side area (as the fuselage has to provide the lift), a powerful motor and a very effective rudder to control the angle of attack of the fuselage (you also need the appropriate piloting skills, as your rudder takes over the elevator function, your elevator will become your rudder in knife-edge etc. ). It is pretty obvious that some models are better suited than others. :) Jürgen

If your plane is not capable of full knife edge, you can still do a partial knife edge which looks nice and is a lot of fun. Just start by banking the plane with ailerons and use opposit rudder to keep it going straight, (technically a forward slip). Start your first pass this way using only a little bank, then increase the bank angle on supsequent passses until you reach the limit of your rudder authority to keep the plane going straight.

Learn to fly heli's that will train you. You wind up flying the rudder and not realize it.

Or in normal flying, consciously make your thumb move the rudder, even if you're just jerking it around, then eventually you'll learn to manipulate it to do knife edge and all the other cool stuff (such as hovering) and such.

Higher Plane Productions has a video of a fellow who lost one wing in flight on his IMAC plane. He ended up landing the plane in knife edge with fairly minimal damage. Unbelievable.

Yes it does show some, but I know there has to be a decent "how to" site in all of the whole world wide Internet. At least I have to believe there is anyway. I haven't had much luck in finding one though.

Knife edge is easy! As you fly-by pull the nose up slightly, then roll the plane to edge with the canopy towards you, then push the rudder toward the direction you are coming FROM. If the model tries to not go straight, there are things you can adjust. Plane turns or drags in knife-edge toward the landing gear, typical, Mix-in alittle up elevator as slave to full right AND full left rudder as the master channel, or manual adjust BOTH ailerons down ward alittle. OR if The plane circles toward you in knife edge adjust the opposite as above. If you are good flyer you can just hold a little elevator, up or down durning the stunt to correct, without mixing. Once you learn the knife edge you can fly knife edge circles using the elevator. Remeber while learning this stunt always pull the nose up aprox 5% prior to starting the trick, Later this will not be needed as you will control the up pitch with the rudder. Good luck And its normal to apply the wrong rudder imput sometimes and have the plane dive. If this happens just level your wings and pull out. CANOPY TOWARDS YOU< RUDDER TOWARD WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM. Flying RIGHT to left Aileron left to stand or bank plane on edge, Rudder to right. Flying LEFT to right Aileron right to edge, and LEFT rudder. This is with the top of plane towards yourself .

Learning knife edge can be frustrating until the day you panic and pull full opposite rudder straight into the ground!
