hi all! hey, as I have mentioned in the past,I just finished a Great planes Spirit sail plane.weather got bad and it looks like i've got some time for cosmetics and to go ahead and install the spoilers. My problem is wene i followed the plans the controll horns on the spoilers won't clear the hole provied. To enlarge the hole would take a lot of wood off the bottom bass wood spar...........(an option I don't care for) and cant trim enough off the horns to help. BEEFA! how did you do this or did you not have this problem?THANKS AGAIN!

What makes you think that you can't trim enough off the botom of the spoiler horns to clear the bottom spar cap? There will be consequences to trimming the horns but those consequences can be delt with.

thanks ollie for your input.did i mention that was a atf plane?
i think i'll opt for a kit next time.it would be easyer!(my modeling skills need sum work)the c.horns are preinstalled, and made of 1/16 ply,i'm afraid if i take enough off them there wont be enough wood left to hook a line too.can theses horns be shaved to .lets say 1/8'' and still be ok?

I dod both, trimmed the horns and took some wood out of the entrance. I then drilled a hole in the side spar and installed a toothpick and also a toothpick above the hole where your line goes. I attached a rubberband between them. This holds the spoilers closed. I was having trouble with them opening on launch's.
Heres a pic. notice two rubberbands incase one breaks in the field.

Jake,
Please tell me you did cut a slot into the spoiler itself to mount the horn, and you didnt glue it just to the underside of the spoiler ..?
I have emailed you off line, with some pics of what i did, and as mentioned there is a typo in the setup instructions that say to install a shear web in the bay where the spoiler horn is, i believe this should say NOT to install it, as is shown in the pictures. If you have installed it then you will have clearance problems : )

Sorry Jake, just reread your post and notice you got the ARF (?) which has some of the work already done...
I bought the kit which you build it all from scratch, which only had the one issue i mentioned above....
Not sure about the ARF model.
If you are still having problems getting the horn to clear the bottom spar, before hacking any more off the horn, you could try shaving off some of the top of the spoiler...? just a thought.
I would think that this should not have occured in the first place, unless the instructions say that you may need to modify it to fit.
Are you able to get some pictures ?
Regs,
Beefa.
