Hi,
My friend built a Majestic with a V-tail however there were no travel throw settings mentioned in th instructions and it seems to spiral when tightening a turn.. Any recommendations for the travel throws on the V-tail.
Thanks,
Ray

I don't know what the suitable controls throws are for a Majestic, but I doubt this is the problem. Every glider will "spiral when tightening a turn" with additional aileron or rudder -- the control throws have nothing to do with it. To maintain a level circle, it is necessary to feed in more up-elevator as the bank increases and the turn tightens.
Or maybe he's seeing the common Majestic tip stall? In that case the solution is to wash out the mid panels, about 1/8" or 3/16" up at the outer-break TE.

Thanks Mark.
I'll sugest the washout.

I have had good performance with +/- 5 degrees on elevator and +/- 15 degrees on aileron (using elevon mixing). More throws seem to result in the sensitivity/instability you mention - i.e. tendency to spiral in a turn. My Maj has the increased dihedral and washout suggested by Mark.
Am going to try some differential (60% up, 40% down) next time out - will try to let you know what effect that has.

kostuk,
definitely ask him if he put the 1 degree of washout in at the outer rib in the mid panels. This did get added to the instructions, but it's an easy thing to miss when building.
On the control throws, the numbers Rogo is using are basically what I am doing as well.
You know... one of these days, I'm going to finish up the "new" Majestic. It started from the excellent mods suggested by Dr. Drela, but it's still not quite where I'd like it.

Brian,
I have a Majestic kit, I bought off of another Liftzone member. Would it be possible to order the 'revised' v-tails as suggested by Dr. Drela from you?

Hi Eberwein,
I also built a Majestic for myself and really like it. I extended the wingtips by 4" each side, added more diehedral, and made an airfoiled cruciform tail. I place 3rd with it at the Phoenix SW Classic last February in the `Woodie' class. Bob Vixie came in first with a V-tailed Majestic. Definitely worth upgrading if you get a chance.

Got out today and tried v-tail differential; helped a little bit - not as much up elevator required in turns, turns a bit smoother.
