I finally am getting around to building my Art Hobby Boar 2M thermal ship... I sold 4 of my Hobie Hawks so now I have some ROOM!

I knew right off the bat that the tail feathers on the Art Hobby stuff are on the extremely light weight/fragile side (ie - easily broken) because of my experience with my Art Hobby Colibri (I love the thing!)... but weak tail feathers.

SO my firstly I made some mod's to the tail feathers before I even got started.

First I inlaid a very small CF rod down the leading edge of the stabs. The rod I had was a bit stiff to try to bend around the radius of the rest of the stab so I went out about 7" from the root.

Second I glassed both sides of the area where the control horn mounts. In the Colibri this was one of the first areas to give me trouble.

I have posted photos below. I will post more as the progress continues!

I really like the look of this plane!

Even thought the wood sheeting on the Boar is awesome I wanted a more high tech look... so I went with some conventional colors: WHite top, black bottom. here is a photo of the right wing and one of the tailfeathers, I usually make some kind of marking on the underside of the right wing for better orientation.

Now I can cut the flaps, ailerons then join the wing together and install servos.

More to be posted later

Thanks for posting these pictures. Could you share with us how you obtained you paint covering results?

I've been waiting for the High Aspect to be released and would like to do something other than all wood-looking wings.

The two reasons I wanted to paint instead of cover my wings were: Weight savings and ease of repairs/touch-up. It actually probably takes as long as covering and is a bigger mess, but I hope the benefits will be there long term...

To paint the wings and tail feathers I first sealed and sanded the wood surface. I used the lacquer (Deft semigloss) availible at Home Depot. This is what Art Hobby recommends.

BE SURE TO MASK OFF ANY WHITE FOAM FIRST! The lacquer will dissolve any foam not covered.

I sprayed 2 coats, letting each coat dry (about 5 minutes on a nice day) then sanded it smoothe with 320 grit. I sprayed 2 more coats and again sanded it smooth. The wing is now sealed and ready for paint.

If you can find lacquer paint in the colors you want, stay with lacquer if at all possible, it dries faster and weights less. If not, use a FAST DRYING enamel (the can says "dries in 12 minutes or less) if you use a regular enamel you will be waiting over night or longer before you can touch it! - I used Krylon semi-gloss for the white since I could not find a semi-gloss lacquer white.

I use semi-gloss or "satin" on the colors when I paint wood. Wood is never perfectly smooth and absorbs some of the paint sheen, the high gloss stuff just looks crumby to me. Also, blending repairs with semi-gloss, satin or flat paints is much easier!

Anyway, I just masked off what I did not want painted and sprayed 3-4 coats of the lacquer and 2-3 coats of the enamel (the enamel covers better).

I do wish I could have found the white in lacquer... it would have dried so much faster!

So that's about it! I plan on adding some more color to the top of my wing, but have not decided what to do yet... more to be posted later!

Is it yours the Boar 2M RES?? How is it? Would you recommend it for a Beginner that have some pilots around him while flying??

I have just finished 2 BOARs from Arthobby. One is a 2 channel Polyhedral V-tail and the other is a 4 channel flat dihedral cross tail. I asked about flaps but was advised by Andre from Arthobby that they were not recommended.

I found a good way to add colour quickly and easily while retaining the lovely wood grain of the poplar.

A painr expert friend told me that you can use normal house pint tints in clear lacquer. It works extremely well. One coat gives you good coverage and it dries in minutes.

So go to a paint store with some small jars in hand and ask for some tints (these are the really dense colours they use to make all the various shades of house paint). If you are lucky like I was they won't even charge you for them.

Then mix some clear lacquer and thinners as directed (2:3 in my case), add a small amount of tint and mix well. Spray it on as normal.

I covered all the taile surfaces on both models with 3/4oz flass cloth for strength and ding resistance.

I have also added the really nice Art Hobby tow hooks for bungee launching.

I have not had a chance to fly them yet but am really looking forward to it.

The Boars are made as a 3 peice wing. The wing comes in 4 sections in the box. You join the middle 2 sections where it mounts to the fuselage and the then the 2 tip sections plug on using 2 carbon joiner rod each side.

Few mods I made:
Finish in polyU waterbase worked well. Very tough finish. Paint over it if you want.
Use two wing hold down bolts, throw the pin out.
Throw the tail out. Build new ones with thicker wood and Drela airfoils shaped in. Flys better.
Put a turbulator that is .014x.125 wide @ 55% on the wing for improved performance.
