Hello I have recent been getting back into RC hobbies. My question is on my original Kyosho RC surfer dude. I see that alot of people want these because they no longer make them so I want to fix mine up. I need to get a watercooled ESC as i want to put a faster engine and NiMh batteries and things got way too hot and melted my lid a little bit. I have seen rcsurfrider.com where they sell one for 70. Are there any others out there?

Mtroniks Viper range have ribs underneath that will accept a cooling tube. however if you use the proboat tornado50 esc, which is flat faced, for example, you could always epoxy the tube to it

Im not very knowledgeable with RC but i have a Peak Performance Nightmare 2 that came out of a car. Not sure if i can put this in my boat. Hoe do you determine how many turns it has? I ran a 3000NiCad battery with it and it almost melted the wires. I just want to get something to do the job and not spend 200 bucks for some watercooled ESC i have seen made by castle creations.

to be homest when it comes to "turns" I am totally lost, that is something that the race mob may know.

firstly it may have melted the wires because the wires were not rated for the amps you were trying to draw. does it give you a can size on the motor somewhere, like "540, 700, 545" etc?

I think that's a "stock" motor, 540 size, 27 turn - pretty mild.

How many cells were you using, and what load was on the motor?

Good Luck!

a 50amp Proboat Tornado 50 should cope, 50A load capacity 7.2-12v (6 to 10 cells), hell I put one with a 700 motor and it copes adequate without watercooling

i was using 6 cells 3000mAH Ni-MH. I think the stock motor is a 540 27 turn. But the one i was using i just picked it up and threw it in. It about the same diameter as the stock motor(maybe very slightly smaller) but the instead of being all metal on the back the one i used has small wires, transistors , whatever u want to call it. It open on the back. I looked for anything on the motor but all it says is Nightmare2 Peak racing motors. And made in Japan. I can twist and stop the driveshaft 6 times before it reaches the same spot it started if that means anything. The stock one i can hardly feel to count how many times it stops. I was using the stock Hitec receiver as well. With a simple on/off switch that a servo triggers.

Give him a call - he's a real good guy to talk to and a real wealth of information.

He has the brushed ESCs marked as "sold out" but I have parts for about 40 more of them (they are RC-Hydros.com Victory controls with different cooling tubes soldered on). If you need one, I can make it (I am RC-Hydros.com).

I have talked with I believe his name was Ed from rcsurfrider.com. Im looking possibly to upgrade mine to the pro version. So from what I am reading you have the same ESC's as his with different cooling tubes and yours are 20 bucks more? Ed sounds like a busy guy because it took a week to email me back and i like 20min from his location and wanted to see if he some time to talk and pickup my purchases and he said he doesnt have to do so.

Also why can i not use a BEC on your ESC with my AM transmiter? Surfriders does not mention that. getting rid of 4 AA batteries would help alot with things under the lid.

Im guessing RX is reciever but it is a hitec that came with the boat.

if its a hitec it should be bec enabled. if that esc doesnt give you bec, try the Proboat tornado 50, 7.2-12v (6-10 cell) 50A, or try one of the Mtronics Vipers

I think those are Ed's close-out prices - he wasn't making any money selling them at that price, that's for sure.

As a dealer, he has the option to set his prices anywhere he wants. You can get them from www.OffshoreElectrics.com for 5 cents less than me.

Ed sounds like a busy guy ...

He is. It usually takes 3-7 days for me to get a reply from him too. But you can't find a nicer guy.

You can, and lots of folks do, but I will not recommend AM for anybody for anything, not just with my ESCs. AM is an accident waiting to happen in an electric boat environment. I will not be recommending that people lose control of their boats, sorry.

OK, maybe if you're driving a sail boat you can use AM, but that's about the limit as far as I'm concerned.
