Hello all and thanks in advance...

I am just finishing my Fine Design Miss Madison Hydro and am having a problem filling a gap. The boat has not seen water yet but I am sure there will be a leak. When gluing the top and bottom together there is still a bit of a gap. What can I use to fill it? I was about to use some silicone caulk but I better get some opinions first. I tried using some 5 min. 2 part epoxy but it seems to thin and does not "fill the gap"

Any suggestions?

Look for some epoxy putty, or maybe some JB weld would be thick enough to spackle into the gap.

I would contact Doug Campbell directly and ask him how the hull and deck should be joined and sealed. He designed this model:

Marty, if you coat the seam with CA glue, wait for it to dry, and then putty in with Bondo, it should do the trick.

The CA acts as a "middleman", allowing the Bondo to adhere, otherwise, Bondo won't stick to styrene very well---.

Hi Marty,

As it's an ABS hull, filling gaps (and glueing things together, for that matter) goes very well with a goo you make from scrap pieces of ABS solved in Acetone, Ethyl-Acetate, or liquid ABS glue.

I make it in a 35 mm filmcontainer (airtight) to keep the solvent from evaporating.
Depending on how much solvent you've used, the goo can be applied with a brush, or a spatula.

When the solvent evaporates, the goo shrinks, so you'll have to ad one or more layers.
Avoid large quantities, as the solvent will soften the ABS.
The goo bonds very good with the ABS, once it has cured you can see it has welded the ABS.

Regards, Jan.
