Hi *,

I'm just before buying one of the models mentioned above. Unfortunately, I don't know which

Looking at arthobby.eu, I found three gliders that seem to be a good candidate for my purposes. These planes are the Sierra, Serenity and the Evolution. All have four flaps and the wing profils also seems to be reasonable for these purposes.
The plane will be launched using a rubber and approxemately 100m rope.

From my point of view, the Serenity seems to be a good choice. But maybe the Evolution is a better thermal glider, based on the fact that it is 290g lighter. The only fear I have is that the fuselage of the lighter model might be to weak for our airfield and will break.
Looking at the Sierra I'm a little bit afraid that the fuselage might be weak in the rear part. But, looking at the web page of arthobby, the Sierra is marked as being a F3B plane.

Before posting, I did a search search for "Sierra", "Serenivty" and "Evolution". There is a very good build thread for the sierra, but no real comparison between these two planes.

Looking at the other threads I got more confused:
In http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...907&postcount=3 the serenity in mentioned to be more a thermal glider than the sierra. A different poster mentioned that the Serenity flys faster than the Sierra.
To get a little bit more confused, just look at http://www.fatlion.com/sailplanes/other.html. There the Serenity is mentioned to be for intermediate pilots and the Sierra for advanced pilots (and not for beginners).

What I was hopping is that someone out there has both planes and can compare them. Even better would be a pilot that has, beside Sierra and Serenity, the Evolution ;-)

Greetings

Hi Peter
I have had a Sierras and other models from art hobby but not the serenity or evo both which look very simillar to me!
I would say if you want something which will be a little more allround the sierra is the plane to go for but if you want ultimate light weight floater the other 2 would be better but my sierra thermals great of a bungee or winch the other 2 may prove a little more fragile long term those carbon booms are very light!
My first sierra went in vertical from 150' the fuslage was only cosmetic damage and will fly again! (wings where vapourized!)

Hope this is some help

Peter,

You won’t find much on the Evolution 2.5 M, since it has been available for only a few weeks or so. It does look like a very nice, light thermal glider that will be able to take a bit wind; it should be pretty fast for its weight with that high aspect ratio MH 32 wing. The other two will probably thermal well when flown light, which should be possible in the “pure glider” set-up. I should note that the Serenity and the Evolution are actually pretty different planes, with the latter being designed strictly as a light thermaler.

The fuse pods will all be reasonably strong, unless you have a really rough field with a lot rough landings. If the latter is the case, then the Sierra might be the way to go.

All of the planes that you mention are fine for high-start launches. A light winch launch should also be okay, but you would need to makes several wing-strengthening modifications if you want a strong winch launch.
