View Full Version : Help! Arising Star problems

My Arising Star has an OSLA64 Blue engine fitted. But there is a consistent problem that I cannot figure out whats causing it. The engine runs OK for about 8 mins. Then cuts with about 2/3 fuel tank still left. I fill up, up again for 8 mins & then cuts - so yet another dead stick landing. There are other AS in club that run OK (different engine) and using most of fuel up. I've had the tank out, there pipes are all clean & sound, the tank is sealed tight (pressure checked). One chap suggested that the tank was too low in relation to the spray bar, but that doesnt stack up with the fact the same design is flying OK elsewhere.
Anybody any thoughts??

Hi
Does the clunk get stuck sounds like the fuel pipes have been reversed IE the carb pipe should be at the bottom exhaust and filler at the top.
Is it a square shape or oval tank?
I had the same problem also if it's a new engine could it be a bit lean.
Cheers John

Try a hotter running / rated glow plug first and see what happens.
Secondly try a different 'mix ratio' of fuel may also be a problem.

I have just been flying last weekend and found the trainer struggling to get of the ground for first time in 3 years I couldn't seem to get enough power.
One of the guy's at the club asked me to try hyis 10% glow fuel instead of my 5%.
Without adjusting the mixture or anything the plane took of on 1/2 the small grass strip. :D

Yeah this sounds about right, I had the same troubles with my nitro truck also when a different brand of fuel was used. Sometimes also you may find you will have to re calibrate the air / fuel mixture screws when using a new mix, as things are now different.
Trouble starting a friends OS engine trainer and keeping it ticking over, he too may have a fuel problem.

[just in case this is in response to my last post, if not disregard, if so sorry for Hijack] ;)
If you were on about my friends OS (.40 I think) it will start spin a little, bad throttle response and cuts out. He is using a stick to start it, maybe an electric starter might help to try first as it is an old engine ? It might not be firing up properly.

Is the slow running needle too far in sorry not teaching you to suck eggs just sometimes a bit of banter works.
I made the same mistake a few weeks ago forgot to adjust it after taking the carb to bits.

I'll have to have a real good look at it one of the coming days and give it a good checking over. He bought it secondhand with the plane so I (& he) doesn't know what real condition its in or how old it is the problem may even be internal yet I suppose.

I think you have a clunk bent back up against the bulk head of the tank while the tank is full the fuel get down the clunk but as soon as the level of the fuel goes below the clunk. try holding the plane upside down and i bet it will run for longer.
