View Full Version : Question Power supply AC connection pinout

I've forgotten this and need a sanity check. :)
I just received an AC-DC power supply I won on ebay and while the AC (input) terminal block is very clearly marked Line-Neutral-GND, the power cord I'm using to connect to that block is not.
Just to confirm, the wide blade on a NEMA 5-15P (standard 120VAC 3-prong US) plug is Neutral and the narrower blade is Line? Circular pin is GND, of course.
Thanks!

just check with an OHMmeter to see w/c has "resistance" in it...

Thanks,
But in switching supplies, both Line and Neutral have that "resistance", only the GND connection doesn't (and those 3 connections on the supply were marked).
But, perhaps I'm not understanding what you meant.

Hi John,
Yes the neutral is the wide blade :) and if that plug is on a cable the neutral should be the white wire and black for the line ;)

Thanks Pete,
That's what I was hoping.
I had a 5-15R receptacle laying around and the wide blade was marked "W". I was pretty sure this was for "white", i.e., neutral, but I wanted to make sure. :)

Hi John,
Better safe than sorry :D
When I was a bit younger I tended to make ass-umptions :o , happily I survived that period of my life, now I only try to make "safe' assumptions ;) .
Regards,
Pete

LOL...got it up and running but one of the two fans isn't working and the lack of a tach signal from that fan causes the supply to turn off after a couple of seconds. <deep sigh>
This is normally a good feature to have. I just don't want it now when I'm testing the supply and only have 2-wire fans laying around. New 3-wire-with-tach fans are on order. :)
