Are you looking for noisy gas or silent electro.
IMO buy an of shelf plane/glider and mod it UAV.
Then you got a plane with aspects of your desire and config/mission type.

At Present, an electric plane is in use, but it is simply too slow for safe /effective operation.

I think an airframe with a zenoah engine is too big/loud for my application. I am looking for an airframe that can support an Axi 41 series motor and can take off in 40feet or less (with full power run up of coarse) Additionally, a payload of about 4-5 lbs would be sufficient. (almost overkill)

You need a SIG LT-40. The AXI 41 series is recommended for it and I love to fly mine, even autonomously! I moved all servos to the rear and out on the wing and it has plenty of room inside for gear.

I have flown this beauty two seasons and one month ago crashed it because of RC control loss - i tried to get altitude record. It climbed in thermal raise 4m/s but at 1400 meters flown into cloud and was done:mad:.
Since it had really good flying behavior i decided to build it again and make molded negative form for fuse, CAD designed wing CNC milled from 4mm plywood. Profile for wing is still CLARK-Y and it is sufficient for flying, take off and landing of this baby.
One change will be made - V-Tail will be replaced with horizontal elevator and two rudders on booms - setting with some autopilots is not easy with this V-Tail configuration.
I didn't test it with more than 3lbs payload. Unfortunately i don't have recorded any flying video. But it flies really good even at low speeds.
Was powered with AXI 4120/20 + 5s 5000mAh, 70A ESC.

Hi Lospalos, Love your plane and construction. I am looking at similar power train to you but have a question as you have kit in question.

Looks like you have an Aeronaught folding prop with cooling type spinner. I have a AXI 4130 which is bulkhead not radial fitted in pusher config but am looking to get the same spinner as you with folding prop. Do you think there is enough clearence of prop if mounted to motor shaft plus 4.5mm bulkhead? Or if not is there anyway of making clearence with spacer etc?

Hi Denham,
as i haven't tried it in bulkhead configuration i can't answer your question. But prop is Graupner and is well shaped so i thing there wouldn't be a problem.

Sorry, i'm just hobbyist not manufacturer. But when i'll have finished form for fuse, i can make more of them and prepare more CNC-ed wing profiles, perhaps assemble a few kits for persons interested.

a uav can be any design you want it doesnt half to be the same design as anybody else make a uav is any kind of vehicle you can put autopilots sensor packs in and fly to sertin way points via gps or satelite tracking a lt 40 make a awesome uav so does a senior telemaster it float forever doesnt take much motor to fly either one the telemaster will carry 13 lbs of weight that why it uses struts on the wing panels and perfect camoflauge using a model plane anyway no one will suspect anything if they see it in the air they will think some kids are enjoying thyre hobby so do as you want but thats the way i went i use a easy star from multiplex at 75 dollars if lost no problem auto pilots gotten so small u can fly it in about anything .

That is a good point, Everyone is making UAV's to look like the military versions. I know that the design makes sense in so many ways, thats why its used. But in this day and age maybe not a good thing! Enough trouble trying to keep these machines in the sky and doing what we want with out getting shot out the sky as well :rolleyes:

my point exactly you dont want a 200 thousand dollar uav aircraft shot down look what that would do to your bottom line useally put a person out of business and people see something that resembles a military aircraft it is good as destroyed .especially in aisa or pakistan they are military weary and very scared so gettin away from the norm is ok for once.......
