Hi Gang,

I flew some 1/2 A CL in the early 80's, but then went on to R/C gliders, then power, then to Electric helis.

I am now looking to simplify, bring back some old memories, and once again feel the plane flying in my hand (I miss that).

And of course, I want to do it electrically if possible.

My initial thought is to pick up a cheap Cox Electrastar to play with (an introduce it to my kids) while I look around and build something. Has anyone flown one of these?

I assume it is pretty slow with only 12 foot lines, or underpowered and fast which may make me sick...

Hey this forum isn't dead, it's just resting ;)

I don't know the Electrastar sorry. However if all you want initially is a trainer i.e. basically to just go round and round then a Speed 400 will work either with power down the lines or a battery on the plane, take your pick. There is at least one design floating around for a down the liner by Dr E who posts here from time to time. The advantage of power down the lines is that it's very easy to put a switch on the handle so you can start and stop easily (e.g. when you get dizzy ;)).

I knocked up a very simple sheet wing thing with a S400 and 7 cells on the plane and that flies too. Cus I just can't help fiddling I made it with throttle control down insulated wires but it was a bit pointless cus it needs almost full power just to stay off the ground ;). It'll do a sort of wingover but that's its lot :(. It doesn't really have a plan but if you want the dimensions let me know (or perhaps I'll draw up a simple plan).

Next step, a lot less weight, a bit more power and, hey presto, stunts (I hope).

Check out the Brodak 1/2A planes on www.brodak.com
I have a bunch of those 1/2 A planes with 049s cox or norvel. They fly really well and do the full pampa pattern. Probably electric might work, but I like the 1/2A's better then having a 400. I use 42feet .008 lines on them and they keep good line tension and fly fast, and they are light, only weigh about 4-5ounces.
