It happened today and it was witnessed. Unfortunately, the guy with the video camera was indisposed at the time.

I was flying the Slow Hawk and I let Jim Mahoney take the controls. As he was flying no more than 30 feet out and about the same in altitude, we got company.

An American Bald Eagle of even greater span than the Slow Hawk came in and glided silently about 10 feet above the Slow Hawk. He went around for 2 whole circuits like this, low and slow. Then he decended on the Slow Hawk! He extended talons and got to less than a foot away! He was also within 20 feet of us!

I guess he decided that the prey was not that good because he stopped decending and then flew off. We are hoping that he may repeat this action over the next 2 days of the event. The videographer is going to be ready at all flights this time. If we get video, it will be posted on my website right away.

My personal thought of this is wow! The eagle is a majestic bird. I am glad that Ben Franklin lost out on his bid for the national bird. I also wonder what would have happened if we were flying Jerry Rose's Park Hawk?
