View Full Version : Help! 1957 Aeromodeller

Back in 1957, I built a model called the Dunne Type Tailless from a construction article in Aeromodeller. It was a weird-looking pusher biplane, very loosely based on a full-scale design from the early 1900s. It was one of the sweetest flying models I've ever built, and I had literally hundreds of flights with it until it finally flew away one day.

For the last 50 years, I've had an ongoing passion to build another one but I was never able to find a single reference to the model anywhere. About ten years ago, I was delighted to come across the Aeromodeller issue that had the constuction article, and scanned it for future use. At the time, I did a CAD tracing of the plan but have never been able to find the time to build the model.

Finally, I do have a bit of time and can build a "50th Anniversary" version. But find that although I still have the CAD drawing, my original scan of the plan and article have somehow disappeared as a result of computer upgrades and so on. I'm missing some details such as dihedral, motor downthrust, etc., which were on the original plan but which I didn't include in my drawing.

I was wondering if anyone has a copy of that issue of Aeromodeller (I believe it was March or May 1957) and could scan the article for me. It was just the plan and a single page of text with photo. If anyone can help, I would be eternally grateful. Large file size is not a problem, as my Gmail account listed with RCG can accept attachments up to 20MB.

Many thanks,

Harry

Ah, the great old days when a model was just built for the fun of it!!

What a fun project that is; now, an IPS and a couple of nicads, no noise, no radio, hmmmm...

Didn't AMI do a large R/C version a couple of years ago?

I remember the article but I think it was in R/C Model Flyer magazine.

Could be wrong.

What's AMI, Dekan? If they (or anyone else) has done an R/C version, I'd be interested to hear about it. I have my own electric R/C version almost ready to test fly, but I have no idea what flight controls would be effective and can see a lot of trial-and-error ahead.

I'm going with elevons as a start, but have my doubts about how effective those will be and can see ending up with rudders too. Maybe I'll be able to fly it knife edge then. :)

I would have thought elevons are the way to go on this one. Two 5 gram servos fitted on the outer wingtip section, lower wing. 2s1p 1000 Mah LiPo would fit nicely.

2100 opack? blimey.

I'd put a 450 etech 3s and an IPS in that, and two inboard 5gm servos driving CF torque rods to 4 elevons..

Thanks for the input, guys. What I have at the moment is two HS-55 servos directly driving 2" wide elevons on the outer sections of the lower wings, AXI 2208-34, 2S1P 800 mAh lipo, total RTF weight 12 oz. We'll see, if the rain ever stops. No doubt some things will change.

I searched the AMI and RCMF web sites but couldn't see any references to anything like this. That's OK - more fun this way (maybe). Those look like good magazines - you Brits do a much better job than they do this side of the pond.

Harry,

The RCMF/MF article was not a plan feature so it may not be mentioned on either web site.

I have the magazine "somewhere" as I remember reading the article not so long ago. I will have a better search and see if I can find it.

Just waiting for some flyable weather. I wonder if it'll take off with that goofy landing gear setup and no ground steering?

Harry, for some inspiration check this out!:

Notice the washout on the upper wingtips.

Yours is very nice.
