What will happen when all of the Cox .010 and .020 glowheads and other parts disappear? Will our little engines just become collector's items, never to grace the skies again, or do you think that someone will step in and produce some sort of replacements.

Going to be hard to expect a White Knight to step up and make heads for the 010. This gentleman is working on a Turbo head for the 020. He already has one (Turbo) for the 049.

... so how are ya for fishing weights? Lots of engines out there that are worthless because the custom glow heads are not available; I had a Fox 049 that became ballast when the supply of glow heads ran out.

I don't know if I should tell you or not, but the last time I heard, the heads for the Fox .049 were still available from Cambell's Custom Kits for about $6.00. I know that they're in their latest catalog. :D

Is it not possible to dril and tap a dead head to exept a glow plug?

My understanding on drilling out and using a glowplug is that the element recess in the glowplug is much more than the compression will allow on an .020. Thus, the compression becomes too low to run the engine.

Drill and tap yes. Unfortunatly even the short standard glow plugs are too long and will interfere with the piston if the plug is seated in the head. Not good. Even if you could seat a standard short plug, The volume of space inside the plug would be so great as to drop the compression in the cylinder thus reducing the normal power one expects from a given engine.

Granted, this may be an acceptable loss as opposed to not being able to run the engine at all!

Instead, there are turbo plugs made that seat with a bevel on the end of the plug instead of using the copper gasket near the top of a standard type plug. However I just don't think one could find enough room in the small head of a Cox .020 (much less the tiny .010!) to be able to tap for even one of these plugs. I suppose some one could machine a special head if they had the skill and the tools, just for these.

Just passing thoughts I wanted to share.

I wouldnt touch an easy start with a 10' pole. I much prefer the super bee and black widow .049 the ones with the metal bell tank. I guess im old fasioned though.

Jolijar,

Nothing wrong with the Sure Starts. Like all .049's, you need to reset the piston/rod before running for the first time, and again after it's broken in. When I wear out my Black Widow I'll just bolt a Sure Start on the BW tank and have another engine to wear out again. And when the glow heads are all dried up I'll just start flying them as diesel. I'm sure there will be a good supply of parts at swap meets for some time to come for the Cox engines.
