Flying In The Wind.. What To Fly In Windy Weather?

OK it is an odd question but when the wind get's up a bit my copters
will not fly.

I don't want a plane that needs to go some distance.. I like hovering
and manouvering close to home...

Anyone seen anything that does well in the wind (besides a windmill)
and can be fun to fly..

What designs of HCs do best in the wind?

I hope you know what I mean (and don't just think I'm a nutter :o)))

What model are you flying and how fast is the wind "really" blowing? That
is, what to "you" call high winds? ;-)

Just about anything from a 30 size machine on up will handle the wind just
fine as long as it's setup properly. Of course, the larger the model the
better, but the wind can still get strong enough where the fun factor starts
dropping significantly regardless of what you're flying. At any rate, model
helicopters as a whole will handle high winds "way" better than any fixed
wing I've ever seen. The most limiting factor is almost always the pilot!

Kites are good fun. Especially the big ones that can lift you up and drag
you round the field.

As in they won't get off the ground or you can't control them or you
just won't fly in the wind? Wind, like it or not, is gonna be an
issue 90% of the time you want to fly.

Depending on your skills, you can get one of the micro collective
pitch ships (Hummingbird CP 2, Blade CP etc..) or a Raptor 90 and fly
in the wind just fine.

I fly my Trex 450s in the wind all the time - usually because the wind
is blowing all the time. They handle the wind just fine. My Trex600
handles wind that'd make the 450s a bit tough to control without even
flinching.

Collective pitch. Fixed pitch or contra-rotating birds aren't going
to do much for your fun quotient in the wind. Again, if the skills
are there, any sized bird can be flown in the wind. Larger helis will
tolerate greater wind velocities better.

Now that sounds fun...

I fly my HCs on the field bordered by trees opposite my house (edge of
city near a country park.) Up to about 30ft they fly OK but above that
all hell let's loose.

My heavier copter works OK as long as I keep mid-field.

I had two rather cheap & nasty 2 channel twirlies that crashed so
cobled together a poor man's Chinook that does rather well hovering
20ft+ over the tree line....

Hence my seemingly stupid question.... :(

Maybe it's time to get a big kite.. at least I can pull the strings
and pretend I'm in control even if my feet are somewhere off the
ground... eek..
