I was reading through an old Model Airplane News issue (several years old). There was a Randy Randolph column about improving the performance of one of the Cox .049 motors. One suggestion was to install a throttle sleave made by "Ace." I went to the Ace hobbies website (not sure if it's the correct "Ace") and there was no mention of any throttle sleave.
Anybody know if this sleave is still available and where I can find it? Or any other throttling options for the old .049's? Thanks,

Sorry to say this, but this is an electric airplanes forum.

GregG, could you move this?

I wouldn't bother trying to convert a non-throttled Cox engine. It's a whole lot simpler and more effective to just swap the motor for an 049 that is already designed for R/C like one of the Norvel Big Mig Sport .049 or the AP Wasp .061

If you are determined to convert the Cox motor, check out ebay. They often have Cox parts and I've seen throttle motors or throttle parts occasionally.

Personally I think anything 1/2A sized needs to be electric as e-power has the advantage in that size range. And those tiny little screaming 1/2A glow engines sound really annoying and not at all airplane-like.

Boy, ya leave the helm for a break and somebody tries to turn the boat around. ;)

Oops, sorry folks for posting in the wrong place. Didn't look at the forum description close enough, just saw "sport plane" and went for it. Thanks for the help though. I've got a few Cox motors just sitting around, so I thought if I could put 'em to good use...

If you check RC Universe they have a 1/2A forum. Dig around in the posts, there's a few machinists that make Cox exhaust throttles. I don't think anyone is mass producing them anymore. Norvel and AP have some great throttled .049's - .15's of different performance ratings. They run from 30.00 - ???. I have done several electric plane to glow convertions and despite what some say the plane normally ends up being lighter, therefore faster than spd 400. The norvel and AP engines have a great muffler system, some of my norvels don't sound much louder than a spd 400, but the Cox engines are louddddddd. With all the micro electronics, 1/2A is enjoying new life
